I have two vettes, an 81 and a 87.
My wife has agreed to a C5 if I give up one of the other two, the 81 is actually worth more but I drive the 87 all the time and everything works. So I i decided to give up the 87 and buy a 2004 coupe with 12K that I found. Then the guy ( a small local dealership ) tells me that he would take both of the old vettes in trade against the 04 leaving me a balance of about 13,000.
I'm torn, what would you do?
BTW, I cant afford the insurance on all three and my garage is full.
What's wrong with the "81?
What does the NADA.com or KBB.com sites tell you that your two cars and the "04 are worth.... are worth? compare and see if he is giving you a fair deal or not....
If the '87 is in better condiiton and your wife would use that as her DD, then I'd sell the "81 privately.
You can advertise it here. In the worst case you could fll back on the delaers offer, but you may be able to get a few more $$$ or at least give a fellow forum member a price that makes you even on the fealer offer
Well I am kinda in the same boat as you.I have my 86 cpe which I drive quite often when it is nice out.I also have a 75 vert with 40,000 miles that I hardly ever drive. The vert is worth a whole lot more than the 86.I plan on selling the 75 this spring to buy a C5.The 86 has 107,000 miles and runs great and I love the feel every time I slide down into the seat.My 86 is here to stay.Good luck.
Tough choice, wish it were mine.
Don't trade, sell private party. Don't buy an 04 the 00's are currently the best buy. An 04 will kill ya on resale. Just taking it home will cost ya, $5,000.00.
Then theres $13,000 at 5-6% for 3-5 years. Added insurance costs it cost more to replace a 04.
Is there any real difference between a 00 and 04?
The trick in owning a toy is not to take a bath on it.
Tell him you will spilt the differance and give him $6500 plus the 2 Vettes.
the $13,000 was arrived at after much deliberation, I might get another 1-2K out of him but thats it. If he would take both of mine and 6.5K I'd write him a check today... Just a minute....
I just called him, nothin doin, the C5 belongs to the dealership owners wife and she wants a C6 (yuk), almost got the impression that he's hoping I dont take him up on the last offer.
I cant see him putting more than 16K in my two cars and still expect to make much money so that tells me the cash price must about 29,000 for the 04, right?
Hey, anybody wanna buy two vettes, one price?? $17,000 today only....well maybe tommorow too
Here are some prices of Corvette coupes taken from Sep. 2004 "Corvette Enthusiast" magazine, based on condition:
Year........Excellent.....Good........Fa ir
2003........$38,800.....$34,000....$30,6 00
2000........$32,000.....$26,700....$21,8 00
1987........$12,400.....$8,100......$4,9 00
1981........$18,200.....$11,100.....$6.2 00
So your two Vettes should be worth between $11k and $20k by now.
Since the 2004 is listed at $35k that difference of $13k seems like a reasonable deal as he is allowing $21k for both your Vettes. If they are in Good to Excellent condition he maybe can sell them for $25k-$30k.
The only issue is if you want to get rid of both of the other Vettes.
Great info 65Z01, I had just talked myself out of it and now it looks a little better. I'm guessing the real cash price for the 04 must be about 29-30, cant see this guy proposing this deal only to make 3-5K off my cars and give up the 04 that could get him 35K from the right buyer.
My cars are both fair to good:
The 81 only has 68K miles with original paint but still has a few problems, no horn, no emergency brake, cruise, power locks, security. Mechanically its great I have put in all new universals, new AC, carpet, sony stereo, brake lines, distributor, carb (79 roch), and pulled the computer and air pump.
The 87 has 128K miles but everything works and looks good, two year old paint and new interior, new radiator and water pump.
I think I might try a novel way to sell my cars two for one price, all or nothing.
I worked an ad for the Jacksonville paper last night and will puit it in this weekend, maybe I'll find someone who wants a starter vette collection for under 20K.
If it was me, I would make some sort of checklist that would include stuff like:
1) which car do you use most often
2) which car do you both enjoy the most
3) which car has a better story behind it
4) Are you a cruiser or a racer (definitely go for C4 technology as a racer)
5) how bad do you want that C5
... you get the idea. Obviously this is just a start. For myself, a Corvette is about emotions and enjoyment, not investment. If you're looking for a return on an investment, sell all your Corvettes and go buy some real estate. If you own Corvettes because you really enjoy them, listen to your heart and not your head!
JMHO...

yeah, what esch said, and don't trade a car in, and don't let them do the financing (unless it's a great deal), and only pay what the vet is worth, not what they want because they know you're in love with it...
All good advice..... I'm selling the 81 and will continue to drive the 87 and look for either an older c3 or a early c5.
I found a 02 Z06 for good $ but it has 71,000 miles, to many miles to bother with??
You say you are getting a good deal on the 2004 for $35,000, but what kind of miles? There are great deals out there.
My friend just sold his 2002 Z06 w/ cartek h/c package and bolt ons w/ 24 k miles for $30,000. Just and FYI.....
Look on the bright side..... you have a dilemma most would like to have.
he is asking 31,500 for the 02 Z but I can probably get it for around 29,000, I'm thinking it has to many miles..
The 04 has 14,500 miles, and the ower is being an *** the last few days, trying to pressure me into buying the car. The old song and dance... "I have two other buyers but I'm holding it for you" etc.
Last conversation wasnt very pleasent, it included my explaining to him where he should be garaging the car within his person.
Step away from the deal. You have two vette's that work and your letting your lust for a C5 impair your ability to think rationally. The salesman is playing you like a flute. Chill out; there are more cars on the Horizon if your just patient enough to wait. Let the saleman call you. Good luck!

Hahaha, I got my 89 Vette for giving away a multiple problem, P.O.S. 2001 Honda Civic. I rule!!!
I didn't pay them or Uncle Sam a single penny! Nada, zip, zero. Let's just say I got my gf at the time to seduce them... J/K
