Default programming PKE transmitter

I have read multiple postings on this site in search for ideas to solve my very frustrating problem - and none of them seemed to help. Here it is: I have a 1994 vette that I just purchased and didnt come with a remote - so I spent $150 bucks and bought one from the local GM dealer. I did put the new transmitter 20feet away, turned the ignition key on, pushed the trip/odo 2 times, held the fuel/info button and YES the PKE light did light up - BUT everytime I turn the ignition to off the light never stays on (longer than a sec- then goes out) .. and has never blinked! I get out of the car to get the remote and after I shut the door and start walking - the horn chirps and the doors lock - and the remote doesnt do anything! I have tried many times - to no avail - I called the dealer back and they said I could bring it in for 40-80 bucks to diagnose to see if any codes are in the receiver or any other problems ---- any other tips on this? I really want this feature to work!

Review the procedures again:

Transmitter beyond 10' from vehicle.

Ignition to "ON'.

Trip/Odo push twice.

Within 5 seconds push and hold Fuel/Info until PKE light comes on and stays on.

Turn key to "OFF" but leave the key in the ignition. The PKE light will begin flashing. (Leave the door open.) Don't mistake the LOCK position for the OFF positions - the symptoms your describing will behave that way (cancel programming) if you go to LOCK.

Bring transmitter into range, just get close to the rear window (coupe or vert) and look through to observe the PKE light go from flashing to steady on.

If its just one transmitter to program, once it is recognized by the fact it goes from flashing to steady. Just remove the key.

Let us know if this helps.

thank you - I thought I would have success... as your right, I was turning the key back to the lock position after the PKE light was on, although even with turning it to the "off" position - the light still disappears. (I may sound ignorant.. although I need to confirm - the book does not have an "on" position - I have been using "run" which is the label the book uses) I have checked all three fuses - #'s, 26,40 and 42 and they all appear to be intact. Please - any additional tips?

Sorry I meant RUN, not ON.

Don't worry I had programmed two of them and on the third one or was it a re-program anyway I did the same thing - drove me nuts until I realized DUH don't turn the key completely to Lock.

I think you have to be careful on the key position so turn it slowly back to OFF.

Yep this sounds weird because your describing a situation in which you cancel the programming. Just try it a couple of times. I'm not sure on the 94 how to pull codes or if you can but I'd be interested in whether or not it threw a PKE code.

When you check a fuse be sure to use a DVM, visually can be misleading. I had it happen on a 5amp fuse to the courtesy lights. Looke fine but on the DVM and open circuit.

You said you just bought the vette, I know this sounds really silly but have you gone over the interior with a fine tooth comb (so to speak) just to ensure another transmitter isn't laying inside somewhere. Look under the seats, pop the lower cushion out its real easy push on front reach underneath front and release the bail. Open the cargo area jack storage, it goes a lot more forward then straight down, so reach up in there, check behind the seats. Sometimes its the simplest things that can cause problems.

Make sure the radio is turned off while programming.

The manual says that it will flash the number of the transmitter to be programmed, once for first xmiter, twice for second and so forth up to three. Now I'm just repeating this but for the life of me I can't make sense of this. Well haven't yet.

Get an owner's manual. It has the instructions on how to program the PKE for your remote. Cheap investment to have something that tells you how to use all the bells and whistles on your car.
