Met a guy yesterday with a 92 that got my attention because it's the same exterior color as mine. It's his D.D.and I have to admitt it was a bit rough and it has 124K on the clock.
Anyway,my point here is the only problem he's had with it has been trans.slipping.ALL other major components are origional!water pump, opti, even the plugs. No mention of hub problems either.
Now this is not to say I condone this kind of treatment but it does show that these parts are not as absolutley doomed to early failure as some folks predict.
In general they seem pretty durable. I have 124k on my 89, and runs strong, doesn't smoke, etc. Rearend makes no noise at all. A lot of it has to do with maintenance and how it has been driven over the years.
These cars (A4) generally run at low revs giving them a long life.

130,000 miles on it when I sold it last September. Still had the original engine, transmission, and AC unit. Other than replacing the radiator and various seals, the car ran great and got great gas mileage on the road as well. (Usually 25-27 MPG at freeway speeds.) I could run it up to
130 MPH before the engine started breathing hard. Best of all, everything on the car worked perfectly.
I'm still in touch with the current owner, and he and his wife love the car - especially since it was nice enough to win trophies regularly at local car shows.
Now I'm working on getting my 1995 Coupe - but at only 58,000 miles I have a long way to go.
