Default Oh Yeah, I'm a Moron

The best part of this thread is I don't know any of you guys personally....you'd really give me #$%^ over this one:

Last week I posted "LT1 wont start"...My 95 Caprice 9-C-1 cop car wouldn't start after running low on fuel, then refueling. I could squirt 3cc of fuel into the throttle body and it would run for a second or two and promptly die. Most assumed fuel filter or that the pump got too hot due to the fuel level getting too low.....Logical.. very logical..... Listening to the fuel tank after turning the key to "ON" did not yield the 2 second buzz the fuel pump usually makes..... Therefore diagnosis made: dead fuel pump or relay

Towed dead caprice home (rush hour of course)

Off to Autozone for a filter, relay, and fuel pump......Abt 150 bucks

Fuel tank completely full...so with a cheesy hand pump, we evacuated 22 gals...spilling at least 5 on ourselves (and gas is so cheap these days)

Finally disconnect the hoses and hangers, lower the tank to the ground, and I notice something.........

A disconnected, three wire electrical pigtail dangling from the pump/sender area of the tank. "Mark" I shout to my son, "tell me you disconnected the wires to this fuel pump when you were under here a few minutes ago." His reply: "Didn't see any wires Dad"

So guys you guessed it by now, I plug the male and female connectors back together and the old cop car roars to life....... Hmmmmmmm
The Laughs are on me this weekend

and you publically admitted this? I wouldn't attend the cruise in until next year.

glad you found it!

I would love to know how the wires fell off in the first place.

Hey, live and learn right? When you didn't hear the pump, that connector is the first place you should of been heading with a volt meter or test light to check for power, and then you would've found the trouble. But hind sight is 20/20 huh?

If thats the biggest mistake you make your doing ok. Doesn't make you a moron just a student. Lesson learned.

Live and learn is right, Dave! I didn't realize there was an in-line connector ....I guess I assumed it was hard-wired to a plug at the pump like a sender has.....But then again it's that ***-u-me-d thing you know!

I wouldn't mind being the stupid of the day if it meant I could take $150 worth of unneeded parts back. No matter the level of experience, we ALL overlook the obvious now and then.

By the way kid, on that note, I like Jackie "Ralph" Gleason but I kind of miss Harpo.

Both are great so it's a toss up.

Here's another great one you can have if you like. I almost used it but decided to stick with the car. It may be too small for avatar but you gotta love it.

I'm with Bogus on this one. I'd also like to know how those wires came undone. I just can't see how connected wires could pull apart. There had to have been some external force that pulled on them to have done that.

An interesting adendum to this story is that just for grins, I called the Chev place and asked them how much it would cost to replace a fuel pump......After a long song and dance about how important it is to also replace the fuel sender ($300.00+) while you are there, The ticket climbed to around 700 frog skins.....and I bet those guys would have never realized it was just un plugged...
Again for those wondering how the connector came unplugged, it was a bit warped, either from 10 yrs of texas heat or somebody screwing with it. But also remember my 17 yr old drives it to school, and it has been in the auto tech lab several times as a teaching aid......anything is possible from pranks to absolute stupidity.
Oh yeah, The 150 Bucks......Goes back into the acct.......Kids in college you know.....The vette moves to the back burner again.

Yeah, then either the mechanic or some dumpster diver would've had your old pump ect. posted on Ebay real quick.

I hear you loud and clear on the college thing.
