Just got my car back from uh...er.. Earl Sheib. It took a lot longer than I thought was supposed to be a week ended up being a month but guess what they did a good job.
Is it perfect? If you are totally **** rententive ...no. There are some fish eyes a couple of little dirt spots. Is it 98 percent better? You betcha. Some of the flaws will dissapear when it gets glazed and detailed but the car looks like glass as it is.No more road chips no scratches in the paint no dull spots.I went to the Steel Valley Nationals hot rod show and ove 50 percent of the cars I saw had worse paint than me.I did make a few stops at the shop to monitor the process and keep them from doing the wrong thing and I suggest anyone who uses them do this.If you want totally factory paint job then spend $5-6k me I spent $1400 got factory paint coded paint(Sherwin Williams),Door jams and all and 4 coats of clear so some more wet sanding can be done on the flaws. Now the Bright red top I bought is Torch red.
The worst part of it all was cleaning the dust and the wet sanding white stuff for the last 2 days especially from the engine area.Used gunk engine cleaner and hose .Guess the the Dynaspark is water proof no problems after hosing the entire engine. Got my RD Racing crossframe installed as well as the Wet Okoles and she looks purty I will get some pics posted but I had a 10 footer now I got a 2 and in some areas a 0 footer.I gues you could say I am very pleased.
Back in the 70's I opted for the Sheib paint job on a few cars. My experience with them was the cars looked ok to start with but the paint faded and lost it's shine quickly. Looked good for a couple of years and that was about it. Hope yours fairs better if you intend to keep it. It might, different times, different body shop.
Back in the seventies, they were using generic enamel paint with no hardeners. That is still what they do on their cheapest jobs. You have to specify the more expensive paint, and insist on the guarantee, and tell them you will be back if the car fades. Otherwise, they might NOT put the hardener in the paint: a big mistake. By going back and hanging around, you showed them you cared, and I'm sure they did a better job for it. They probably did not make much money on your paint job. Almost all paint jobs have flaws in them if you know where to look, and how to look.
The paint they use now is much better than the 29.95 paint they used in the 70's.The paint I had them use as stated was high quality( S/W code 42027) and oven baked, wet sanded and buffed.I know they did not make diddly on this paint job as I had them re do a couple of spots.I told the manager from the start that this job would be a rolling ad for thier shop.He told me after theywere half way done he had a couple of other Vette owners come in and he quoted $1k more based on my job. They whined about the price at $2500 because it was "Earl's" he asked if they had any other estimates and they said sure $5000 and up.He said so why do you think my price is high?

In the " old " days the $39.95 paint job included the tires, parts of the windows, & the under carriage . The old Earl Shieb joke motto was : " Earl Shieb-- six prices--one paint job!. Hope they`ve gotten better over the years. Also hope they are not using water based paints like in the old movie "Used Cars"

Had my truck painted by them 6 years ago and it still looks great. with that I would still not allow them near the corvtte. Glad you got a good job and are pleased with the results.
i worked for earl back in the late 70's, and they fired me after several warnings because i took too long taping. with the earl it is about mass painting and who cares if trim gets alittle color on it. attention to detail is money and time lost. congrats and glad you are happy with the work.
Late 60's I tok a 57 Chevy Hardtop to Earl's for a bright RED paint job. Returned that night to find by Chevy painted in Midnight Black Manager couldn't believe they made that kind of mistake but said to bing it back in two weeks for a re-do. Took it home and got all the black off the windows and tires. Repainted to RED two weeks later and turned out pretty good for the basic $29.95
