Default How often to clean???

How often do you clean your K&N filters? I have about 15k miles on mine, but it's been 3 years. Is it time?

I put on about 10k per year and clean mine twice or more per year.

K&N recommends cleaning and re-oiling every 50,000 to 100,000 miles

And, btw, can you clean with a regular hose and a towel or do you need the fancy kit?

I always thought they worked best when dirty. That being said, I have 20K miles on mine without a cleaning.

The fancy kit includes the filter oil that you will need to use before re-installing it. As for the hose, one of the steps in the cleaning process involves washing the cleaning solvent out with water, so it's not like the H2O is bad for it or anything (at least not when it's *off* the car!).

At $9.99, though, why not just buy the kit at Kragen's or PepBoys and do it "correctly"???

Still think the oil is hard on the MAF. In fact, I just lost a fairly new one and there was a thin film of oil on the screen, so I'm going back to stock (again).

What I did was buy a paper one to put on the car when Im cleaning out the k&n. I found it takes a better part of a day to dry throughly after making sure all cleaning solvent was removed w/water, then oil and leave sit to somewhat dry again (another day). Because the previous owner had went a bit overboard w/oil, and I had to clean everything out so I wanted to make sure I didnt go through that again, and I havent. Because of only driving it in the summer months here, I just clean it (or inspect) at the begining of the season. The kit has a special cleaner and I would recomend buying it, as it will also last many cleanings. my.02

That's always been my understanding, too.
I put one in my DD Scirocco five years ago and have not cleaned it yet. Car runs fine....and still gets 38mpg
This is the ONE reason I got the K & N in the first place....
