Default Question on code readers?????...anyone???

Can anyone please tell me what type of code reader for a '95 is the correct one?
Is it the style I or II ?? I have checked old threads and I'll be damned if I can figure it out....can anyone tell me?

THe 95 was kind of a hybrid. It's pretty much an OBDI code system nestled behind an OBDII connector.

I can't remember which post it was, but a few weeks ago I remember a thread where someone also said the 95 had a few OBDII codes thrown in as well as the first year to get a rear O2 sensor...

With the mix of codes and different connector, it's doubtful you'll be able to find an aftermarket code reader that will work for you 100%. If most of the codes are still OBDI, I would suggest trying to make a cable and use WinALDL and a laptop. You can fit a 16 pin OBDII connector on your cable, but the software will give you the OBDI codes... Of course, it doesn't help you with any additional OBDII codes in the system.

Best bet is probably the paperclip....

Best bet is probably the paperclip....

Just short these two pins together with a paper clip and turn the key forward to ON position (engine off) Then read codes on speedometer.

To repeat sequence turn key to off for 5 seconds and then back to on.

Be sure to remove paper clip when done and before starting car.

Ihave a 95 vet and I use the Actron CP9150. It reads both OBD I & II codes. For the 1995, you use the CP 9150 with the newer (96 & after) OBD II cable if your 1995 has the new connector (16 pin vs 12 pin). works fine. CP9150 is rather expensive, but works on newer cars too.

good luck.

Don't waste money ona code reader because with a '95 you don't need one. She'll show you any stored codes on the LCD speedo display when you short pin 4 to pin 12 using a bent paper clip. Here's the gig on it:

To enter the diagnostic mode you will have to ground #12 to #4 on the
DLC. The DLC is numbered, top row, left to right, 1 thru 8. The bottom row is, left to right, 9 thru 16. Ground the pins & then turn the ignition to "on", but donot start. When the manual mode is entered the speedo shud be blank, & the trip monitor shud display 1.0. The indicator "----" will be displayed on the speedo if the end or the
beginning of a list of DTC"S is reached. To display CCM DTC"S , select the display mode by pressing the "Trip/odo" button until 1.1 appears in the trip monitor area of the cluster. Then press the "Eng/met" button to display the first DTC. Continue pressing the "eng/met" button
to display additional DTC"S until the end of information indicator
("____") is displayed in the speedo. A C-12 indicates no stored DTC"S
for the CCM.

If you have to go backwards use the "Fuel info" button.

The following are the various functions you can bring up by using the above procedure:

1. 1.0 Waiting for instructions (CCM).
2. 1.1 Display CCM DTC"S.
3. 1.2 Display CCM data.
4 1.2 Display CCM insputs status.
5. 1.4 Cycle CCM outputs.
6. 1.7 Clear CCM DTC"S.
7. 4.0 Waiting for instructions (PCM/ECM).
8. 4.1 Display PCM/ECM DTC"S.
9. 4.7 Clear PCM/ECM DTC"S.
10. 9.0 Waiting for instructions ABS/TCS.
11. 9.7 Clear ABS/TCS " DTC"S.

Same info more specifically described:

You short pin "12" to pin "4" and turn the ignition switch to "On" without starting the engine.
The speedometer will display any codes using the same protocol as the 1990-1993 model but there are some changes in the designation for the modules plus additional modules are added:
Module "1" is still the CCM module.
Module "4" is now called the PCM module (Powertrain Control Module) because automatic transmission computer control was added to Engine Control Module in 1994.
Module 7 (on the 1996 model only) is the RTD module. (This is the Real Time Dampening module which replaced the Selective Ride Control module in 1996).
Module 9 is the ABS/ASR module number from 1994 through 1996.
Finally, Module "A", the DERM (Dynamic Energy Control Module --- (the air bag control module) will be requested to show any codes.
Just like the 1990-1993 display, you read the codes on the speedometer (big) and read the module number on the trip odometer (small).
A series of dashed lines for instance “ - - -“ indicates no more stored codes for that module.
A code showing as “C12” for the CCM module (module #1) means no codes are stored. So C12 is a good thing to see.
Again, you can cause the codes to repeat by turning the ignition off for five seconds and then back on.
Turn the ignition off and remove the short to restore normal operation.

To clear codes in the CCM proceed as follows:

1. With ignition "off" ground terminal #12 of the DLC (use bent paper clip to connect pin 4 to pin 12)

2. Turn ignition "on".

3. Press trip/odo button on the DIC until 1.7 appears in the trip
monitor area of the instrument cluster.

4. Press eng/met button on the DIC & hold until "---" appears in the
speedometer area of the cluster, this will clear CCM DTC'S.

To clear PCM/ECM codes do the following:

1. Press the trip reset button on the DIC until the desired system is displayed. In this case it will be 4.0.

2. Press trip/odo button on the DIC until the desired diagnostic mode(4.7) is displayed on the trip monitor area of the cluster.

3. Press & hold the eng/met button on the DIC until "---" is
displayed in the speedometer area of the cluster, this will clear PCM codes.

To clear ABS/ASR codes do the following:

Same as above but you’re looking for “9.7” on the trip odo

P.S. If the problem still exists the code(s) will return after engine operation
