Default rear diff.....

i have an 86 with Z51 and G44 and auto. i have read that the manuals have the dana 44, did the autos with G44 have it also? i have looked at pics of the dana 36 and 44 and could point out the differences. can somebody clue me in?

every automatic C4 has a D36 no matter what gears it has.44's have an 8.5 inch ring gear,compared to a 7.8 on a 36.

I think the easiest way to distinguish is that the D36 has three bolts across the top of the cover and the D44 has two in the same area. If you do a search you might come up with a shop manual picture that gets posted pretty regularly that shows the two rears.

This is the best way I know how to check it. I believe the dana 44 has a larger pinion nut as well. 1 5/16 ths conpard to 1 1/8 th or so for the dana 36. I think the dana 44 has a fat rib on the top of the case, compared to a thin 1 on the 36. I never look past the upper bolts though.
