Default Cat question

Eckler's claims that the 1985 model corvette had only a single cat, behind the front Y pipe. Mine came with what they claim to be 86-91 exhaust with the front pre-cats that were plugged. I ended up buying 86-91 type front Y-pipe without pre-cats and everything else exhaust related that is listed in Eckler's as 86-91. It installed fine, except for the rear Y-pipe has a mounting point but the car doesn't have a place to hang it, so it's probably not as strong at that point where it mounts up to the rear of the cat. Anyways, I guess what I am getting at is that I am going to have to continue to smog this thing in CA, and I need ammunition in case the tech thinks it's supposed to have pre-cats. This is a federal car, from New York, and my theory is that the original 85 exhaust rusted out and the previous owner just went and bought a complete system from a junkyard or something. Anybody have thoughts on this? Also, if you have an 85, does your main cat have flat flanges on its ends or one slip end and the other a round end like a donut. Thanks

Relax, your stock exhaust system had no pre-cats, only a main cat.

Here are some pics I shot from beneath an 86 at the NCM. Maybe it will help.

That's what was on my 85. Maybe I can get that rear Y pipe strap like what's shown in your last picture. Just an FYI, you can legally (according to Eckler's anyways, not sure if it's legal in CA) replace the front Y and main cat and eliminate the pre-cats on your 86-91. The package is 250 for the cat and front Y and it fit very well on my car.

You need not worry, 85 didnt come with precats so you will pass the visual if you put a new Y on there. If your engine is warmed up, you will pass the sniffer.

My 85 did not come with precats (none did). The cat does have a flat flange with four bolt holes on both ends to bolt the exhaust pipes.

You don't have to fret.

1986-1991 have precats, and techincally, it is ILLEGAL to remove them.

However, no state tests for them, and only states with visual inspections would fail them. Think about it.

As for your year, you have nothing to worry about.
