Flying car flattens 2 Corvettes in Wappinger
MYERS CORNERS - A New Paltz man was hospitalized Wednesday after he allegedly drove drunk, his car went airborne and it landed on top of three other cars in a Wappinger driveway.
Charles M. Settens, 20, had left a party at a friend's house a few minutes before 3 a.m. and was driving around a wide curve on Sherwood Heights Road when he lost control of his car, the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office said.
Settens drove over a lawn for about 30 feet and went airborne from the top of a sharp drop-off, his car hanging in the air for another 15 to 20 feet before landing on top of two Corvettes and a Cadillac Seville, according to police.
The impact flattened the tops of the two Corvettes and pushed the Cadillac into a garage. Settens and his car, meanwhile, kept going until crashing into a sturdy weeping willow tree.
Settens, though injured, ran from his car and tried to hide in a wooded area, police said. Quick-
thinking sheriff's deputies who responded to the scene borrowed two thermal imaging cameras and found Settens by his heat signal.
Settens was charged with driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident, both misdemeanors. A police investigation is continuing.
