Simple - 350 block bored out .030 with a 400 crank.

It is a torque monster

Makes for a fun ride. I will never build a 350 again. If starting from scratch, same money to build a 383. The torque comes from the additional stroke. 350 uses a 3.48 stroke, 400 uses a 3.75 stroke.

Its just a block thats been machined out .030" in the cylinders, and has a larger stroke crankshaft installed.

Here's a little more info that might help, funny enough Pete and 85 both posted in this too.
They are good guys to listen to, and hopefully in a few days here. I can agree with them on 383s being a blast!

If a 383 is a "torque monster", what is a 400(+.020)SB with Vortec heads, hi-rise dual plane, 800 CFM Quadrajet (modified) and a mid-range cam?

Same setup on a 427 Rat motor 'cept for a 750 cfm Holly spreadbore (manual choke!). At zeroºF or below, it was a real grouch about starting w/o pumping the livin' crap outa it . Once it fired it was OK tho. I got MAYBE 12 mpg w/ it 'round town, but it did make that El Camino scoot!

But! my plain jane LT1 C4 coupe would eat that bad boy alive today.

Here's something to consider as well. A 383 (4.030 x 3.75) and a 421 (4.155 x 3.875) have virtually the same bore/stroke ratio. Talk about a friggin' torque monster........wowie! The difference in cost really only boils down to the retrofit cam stuff and a bit more $ in the rotating assembly

Edit: If you use a factory block as a foundation that is.............

If I had known what I know now when I had the engine built I would have probably gone with a 421
