How does one change the shift boot on an automatic? I have the console all apart but do not know how to disengage the shift shaft for removal. Help! The book just doesn't go there.
If you need to remove the shifter **** pry up the button with a small flat blade and use long-nose C-clip plyers to remove the C-clip on the shifter shaft. Then you simply lift the know up off the shaft.
I had replaced my boot twice, first boot i didn't like, so I became a expert. The time is less than 45 minutes and I'm no mechanic.
STEPS.
1 remove the button, you can use a small screw driver.
2 look into side you will see a clip, it's snap ring, and remove it with a small snap ring pliers.
3 remove headlight ****, again with a small screw driver
4 remove all screws in drivers dash, center dash, center console and look inside your glove box there are two screws there.
5 now carefully pull out center dash completely, will have to move and not remove drivers dash in this process. When that is done the center comes up AFTER YOU REMOVE TWO MORE SCREWS YOU SEE WHEN THE CENTER OUT.
caution: bezel indicator for the transmission idicator will not be aligned when you resemble, so you will have to feel for it to align it up so the shifter indicator works properly.
Becareful take your time, parts are old and break easy.
