ok the serpentine belt on my corvette just took a crap and shredded all to pieces. just before it shredded i noticed that when i turned on my a/c it seemed like i heard a squealing noise that came off and on from under the hood. the noise quit when i turned off the a/c. once i put my new belt on i turned on my a/c today and heard the same noise, i also heard something that sounded like a grinding noise. i think my a/c compressor is gone but i just would like to hear an opinion
Try turning the outer hub by hand - if it's gone it isn't going to turn or it will be extremely difficult to turn it. You should be able to crank it over with only minimal resistance.

my ac compressor is gone and I can turn it freely
Last week in the w/ the dash temp showing 117 deg F., smoke rolled out from under the hood - turned out to be the seals melting and oil from the compressor flinging

Oh, man, sorry to hear that. I'll bet it's not a daily driver in this weather, I can barely stand to do anything in my garage.
A main seal leak won't necessarily lead to a seized compressor, depends on the size of the leak. Most just fling compressor oil all over the hood and until it's all gone, the compressor keeps turning. If a seal is all it needs, you can buy a seal kit at NAPA or www.ackits.com or www.acsource.com.
