I did not lose my keys but I did misplace them and had to call a locksmith as I thoght that I had lock them in the car. He opened the car for me and keys were not there. He could not make me a replacement because of the computer chip in the key. The only place to have one made was at the Chevrolet dealer. I have a 94 vette and the dealership said that GM no longer had my key code on file for them make a replacement. The only way that they could get the code is to hook the car up to the computer and that would be costly.
This happened to me on a Friday afternoon after work. When I got to work on Monday, I was all set to have the dealership to run the codes when a fellow worker asked me why I put my keys in his coat pocket. I almost kissed him. The first thing that I did was took my keys to the dealership and had them to make me an extra set. The cost was $35.00 and I know now what my code is.
Check with a GM dealership for them to see if GM has your key code on file. All you need to do is give them your car VIN number. Good luck.
A good locksmith can determine the pellet resistance for the car and make a key from the existing lock cylinder and tumblers, but it's much easier to get the correct key blank from a dealer. But be prepared to show ID and proof of ownership like a current registration at the dealer in order to buy a blank.
