Default 91 vert - cooling issues

OK.

I have purchased a Dewitt radiator for my car. Recieved it, put it in, and it seems to make a difference when at driving/highway speeds - guage stays right around the middle.

However, when i am stopped (bank, traffic, drivethrough) she creeps right back up to 250 range.

Now, i am in AZ - it is 108 today, and i am running with AC on. But i want this thing cool even when its 120 degrees, stopped with AC on - thats why i spent 500+ dollars on a radiator.

The water pump is new, but standard. I am leaning towards the fans being weak, but i am really looking for a direction in which to throw the cash at this point.

Ideas? Are there better fans to buy?

Maybe a new computer chip so as to start the fans sooner might be the answer.

A lower cut on Fan temp switch would do you well.

Even so, with a stock radiator, you shouldn't run 250. I had a plastic bag caught in mine, look and see if anything is caught up in there. You could have picked it up right after the install.

Default Running hot?

I live near you. I suggest u check water pump and thermostat. A bunch of times this happens.
I doubt if you ever needed a new rad., but you got one. If you wanna hook up, we can check the hoses. My Vette runs cool all times EXCEPT in traffic...Car can't deal with AC on and 105 temp and slow going.

Water pump is brand new - thermostat is a 170 degree and brand new - Radiator had a tank leaking and was toast, so i decided to get a better one since i intend to put a 383 in here soon enough. Hoses are solid, and my car sounds like it runs like yours - its just stopped in traffic, or stopped completely that i have the problem. I just want it to run at 230 or less no matter what.

Make sure your temp gauge is accurate. My other car the gauge would read correctly until 190 and then it would keep going even though the temperature was not increasing past that. It drove me nuts trying to figure out why the car was running so hot and it was just a faulty gauge.

Default more from the unknown

It may well be a fan switch, Maybe the fix is don't drive in rush hour traffic...or turn down A/C.
You could put urself in traffic with AC off and see what happens. I am guessing u did this already. Replacing parts can't be the answer.

HAHAH - well you can bet that turning off the AC in 100+ degree weather sure as hell aint the answer - and not driving the car isnt an answer either. The 190 degree fan switch is something i dont know about though. I have heard about replacing the chip with something that turns on the fans sooner - is that what you are talking about when you talk about the 190 degree fan switch?

I have a 91 and I was worried about mine running hot, I removed and cleaned the rad, I had beach sand in mine, but since you replaced the rad you don't have a problem with that, helped a little. I got a low temp fan switch kit, the problem with that is it installs on the drive side head, a 91 does not have a sensor on that side and there is a plug in the head with a square opening in the center, I tried for days to get that out, no way would not budge. So I ended up having the prom reprogrammed to make the fans come on sooner and to also have both fans come on at the same time. I don't remember what temps it is set at I think it was on at 190 and off at 180 (could be wrong). Since the temp gauge on a 91 really does not have numbers I can't tell you what it runs at, but on very hot days (95 deg here is very hot) my gauge never makes it to half way, before the changes it would be almost 230 (with the AC off, Ac on turned on the second fan and actually made it cooler)
Hope this helps you, you can probably ask on the scan board if someone could reprogram your chip.

If the fan switch has only one wire, can't you just ground it to turn on the fan? If so do it and see if it helps bring down the temp.

Can anyone suggest another location to check excellent aftermarket fans for a 91? Dewitts isnt returning voice mails.
