I have been watching this conversation because I plan on washing my engine this weekend. I just purchased a 1994 Corvette (White exterior) with 60,000 miles on it and have begun the process of making it my own. Good cleaning, waxing, fixing minor problems.
Could you please describe what the Opti is and where? I am very good about taking things apart but not really good a putting back together. Planned in using low pressure to wash the engine but the last time I did this (1984 - 77 Pymouth Volaire) I had to replace the distrubuter cap. Forgot to cover that.
Thanks for the help.
The opti is GM's version of the the distributor cap etc... for LT1/4 cars. It is located below the water pump (definite design flaw IMO) and is sensitive to water/moisture/coolant.
Let me make something clear...
I'm not promoting washing down the engine bay in your LT1/LT4. I'm very careful to keep water away from the opti and so far (knock on wood) I've been lucky. My car is under warranty (opti included) so if it takes a @#$! I'm covered. It is my belief that if you are careful and cover the opti area (and do not direct spray there) you will be ok and, like I said, so fgar I've had no problems at all. I'm used to hosing down the motors in my cars w/ no ill effects and when I heard that you can't do that w/ these cars I was not pleased. After reading many posts on the subject (w/ varying results) I came to the conclusion that if you're careful & cover it well, you'll be ok. SO FAR SO GOOD! Check out my page if you want to see a clean motor...Took me a little over an hour.
Simple Green, Rags, Toothbrushes & a Weekend just didn't equate w/ me. I got a life....just kidding! To each his own though and I sure wouldn't want to hear any "I told you so's" SO WASH AT YOUR OWN RISK!
After buying an OEM opti I inspected it and did a vent hose install on it for my 93.I looked at the plug and it had a bead of silicone around it but looking closer half the bead was not even attached to anything just lying there.Would a mechanic discovered this on an install?I doubt it.They changed the plug on the later optis but it is still a major source of leaks.Aboatguy was directing this thread at my comments on the closed thread.I have a dynaspark now and if you could see them side by side you would not believe the quality of the sealing they did vs. OEM.I power wash mine with no problems not just "hose" it and I speak of the opti itself(damn intake leak gets oil all over it).My comment in that thread was "everyone go power wash your opti and see how many OEMs fail vs. Dynasparks" I still stand by the challange.Of course some OEM units will not fail but none of the dynasparks will.
They are a forum supporter there is a GP starting in tech.It is a direct replacement with the addition of the venting hoses that are in the later opti more to blow out the ozone than to keep it dry(I believe that is why GM went with the vent system not to dry it out).
I have not been able to power wash my engine this weekend, GW spent the night about 100 meters from my house and security had things a little jacked up.
I guess I wash it twice tomorrow!

Some are real ones and some are sleaved with braid. It was like that when i bought it so i only know the ones i pulled off. The ones that need to be changed for the conversion to right hand drive are braided lines, not sleaved. I.E. heater core lines since it swaps sides.
If you look for a little while youll notice a few items are in wierd places, A/C goes into firewall under computer, brake booster and master cylinder are over near the little black coolant tank, steering column isnt going under ASR unit, etc etc....
Your post has given me courage. I bought my LT-4 new and have been afraid to spray it down all this time. With only 30,000 dry miles on the car the engine is not really dirty, I thought, then I saw yours!
By-God I'll do it this weekend!
No intension of highjacking this thread boys, BUT, i love your number plates!!!! Saw one on a ZR1 on here somewhere that said HAHA BYE which is equally as creative and great!!
