I'm not 100% on this for your year model, but on my 93 there are plastic blank plates just above the trim when the top is off. Remove the two screws. You'll see the end of the visor coming through with a big spring on it. The end of the visor is thread and a lock nut generally secures it. It's fairly easy to remove, but getting the new one on is a pain. You have to compress that spring just enough to start the nut on the new visor shaft. I always have to stand on the door sill and use two large flat blade screwdrivers to compress it just enough to start the nut. It'd be real helpful to have an assistant, but it can be done by yourself. There probably is some fancy tool but the manual didn't reference any.
On my '88 there is a washer type of device over the tip of the sun visor rod that holds against the spring.
A small flat blade screw driver will work that washer free; be careful when it releases as the spring & washer can become air borne. If you lose or destroy that washer, just use a flat washer and nut to instll the new visor.
I removed my wasted ones, and left them off. I hated the way they looked, just not right on a vert. They got in the way, and really didn't do anything. Sun glasses, much better.
I just bought 2 of the retainers today. On the early cars I think it may not be threaded but has a rib that the small retainer slips over. You dont want to damage the area of the stud with the rib on it or you wont be able to get the new retainer to stay on.The best way to get it off without damaging this area is to cut a relief in the retainer to get it off.As stated above there is alot of tension in this spring so dont stand over it as it comes loose, safty glasses would hurt.Your welcome.
