Default uh oh.............fire!!!!!!!!!

Just a quick story. Here in R.I., we were blessed with some warm temperatures (high 60's) the past weekend. I took her out for a run on sunday, and took the roof off. Well, I roll up to a store to make a purchase, take my wallet out of the center console, and, leaving her running, run in. When I come out, a buddy is on his way in, and we stop to talk. He is admiring the car and remarking about the great shine. We go on for a few minutes, when he remarks, Hey is that smoke????? I look over and see some wisps of black smoke rising from the cockpit. I sprint over to the car, and quickly discover that I left the lid of the console open, and the sucker is melting!!!!! Apparently, that little bulb in the lid generates some heat!!!!!! Damage was confined to the lid, so a fix will be wallet friendly!!! I didn't realize that the compartment light would get so hot!!!!!

Hey vetteboy88 glad you didn't have any damage. Went out yesterday also was a beautiful day. Don't know how many more we'll have though.

I just replaced my console lid because everyone uses it to lift them selves up when getting in and out and cracked it. The damn thing cost $200 from the dealership.

Glad you caught it in time, and thankyou for letting us know that it could happen. I was checking my numbers under the lid and left it up for awhile. Glad i did not go to be and lost it, and the house.

Yeah, someone at GM should be shot for that. Mine get way too hot to touch if I leave em up. The plastic behind the light is melted too.

I'm just glad you and your car are ok, relatively speaking. It looks like it's going to be one of those wallet-thinning learning experiences. I've left mine up, too, but I never knew the bulb was a real burner. Thanks for the info!!!

you all should maybe try a weaker bulb, that may help since it wont get so hot. I left mine up 3 days one time (it ran the battery flat) and it didnt have any signs of over heating to that degree.

It's so neat to see how other people have experienced the same kind or problems on this site!

No fire, but mine burns hotter than hell too! It flashes, like the bulb is loose, but to even try to touch it, it will burn your fingers off!!

Thanks for the tip though. It sure makes us conscience enough to be sure to close the lid.

Hey, and what's up with people using it to get out of the car?? I'm 6' 1", a tall drink of water, and I have NO problem getting out of my babe!

Guess it's all in the Corvette driver, huh?

Gee, you gotta love it! I laugh at my passengers.......

What a thrill

I tend to agree with CasetheCorvetteman do you still have the stock bulbs? Maybe someone replaced them with higher wattage bulbs. Mine doesn't get that hot!
