In my car the main brain is behind the steering wheel..... at least that's where I think I left it.

The speed is taken on the tailshaft of the trans, at least up through 95. I don't know for 96.
It would be stupid to read the speed anywhere else, since you'd have to calculate the gear ratios back out of it... and it would not work in neutral depending on where you put it.
The speedo reads pulses from the outputshaft, so it doesn't care what direction its turning.
