Either that or they do the job wrong!
I'd rather buy the parts and attack it myself. Some mechanic is not going to do anything different than I am and I have more incentive to do a top notch job with the best parts! But I'm very lucky and have very knowlagable friends to help when my knowledge/ability is not enough. :smash:
You do most the work yourself, you don't want to
chance someone messing up your car worst than it already is :smash: ,
also, no one know's corvettes better than us owners ! ;)
im still under warranty for a few more months. ive been lucky to only have a clucth master go out on me, but nothing else major. cant imagine working on these cars. it wouldnt be fun for me. too much going on.

Same here...only thing to go south with mine is the water pump and battery. The battery isn't under warranty :(
I can do everything (Except tranny work and rear end work, I leave that to the pros) but living in an apartment complex really limits you to a place to work on it. my water pump went the other day and whie it would have been a couple hour job for me, I had to bring it to the shop. :(

Re: Repair poll (A)
Unfortunately I live in a development that won't let you do major repairs. So anything I do needs to be a weekend job, or I have to take it down to the country and beg my brother in law for garage space.
If I had to do engine or tranny work I'd probably have him help. He is building a 500+cid monster for one of his cars now.
i guess i dont understand how you guys do your own work on these cars. L98s are a little easier, and Ive helped my friend do some work on his firebird, but the LTx engines are complicated. Just as an example, what if the engine started miss firing, where would you guys even begin? Or heres a good one. Once in awhile, only when cold, my car grinds when turning over. almost like something is stuck down there. Let te key off instantly then turn again. Never happens a consecutive time, but then it only suppters to life where as normally she'll urupt. Ill have to take her in sometime soon, but how would anyone try to fix that?
vettelt4.. sounds like a starter motor to me.. diagnosing car problems from human rendering of sound effects is difficult.. diagnosing them from text descriptions of those sound effects is even harder!!!
if it's running normally otherwise, i'd stick to my starter motor guess.
working on late model c4's is not that hard.. having the tools is the only key. best one is the helm's manual for starters..
garage access with lifts and air tools helps too.. get that or get a friend with it! lol

Exact same problem, I think. Does it make a sharp crack-like sound, scares the crap out of ya? On mine, it would only make that sound once or twice then the engine would fire up. And the problem was intermittent, worst of all.
I had the starter replaced last Oct, and it's only happened once since then. So my guess is the starter.
All I do is check the oil.. clean the car, put gas in. All mechanical work is done by someone OTHER than me. When I was 16, I tried putting headers on my car with some friends. LOL I broke three spark plugs trying to help. Obviously I did more harm than good. It's not for me.
I've never had an engine or trany problem in my any of my Vettes. I did blow an old engine in my 68 Camaro a few years ago. I just bought a whole new one and popped it in. Then I sold it. Well it was a little more work then “just popped” My Ruby is fast enough for me now.
VetteLT4,
Could be that your starter motor could use some shims?
It may be that it's sticking in to far, or not far enough to contact the flywheel correctly.
My honda accord does this on occasion, but i don't worry about it cause it's my Honda,
if it was my Corvette, that would be a different story :D
My C3 did that always when the starter was about to go.
When I installed 4th or 5th starter I also insulated it from the exhaust pipes and that was 7 years ago and the same starter still works. Heat broke the starters and that loud noise sounded when the bendix (or whatever its called) didn't anymore have enough force to extend the starter all the way to the flywheel. Maybe your new starter is suffering from heat from new, or wrongly shimmed as mentioned above.
