As many of you read, my beloved 88 was taken out by a semi. However, the news is looking better. The truckers insurance is allowing $6400 for repair. This includes a new drivers door skin, rocker panel, tire and rim, and repair to a crack in the bonnet and the rear bumper (easy fixes). I will find out next week when work will start. Hell, they can keep it in all winter!!!!!
A crack in the bonnet? Oh, no. That is not good. The bonnet, er, hood, is a structural member. Cracks have a tendency to travel under the paint, so if you fix what you can see, it could reappear later...
Got to agree.Thats mighty big of the insurance company to -ALLOW- for a givin amount for this repair.I dont know what the laws are in your state but to me,nothing but new OEM parts, that goes for a hood and bumper. The responsible party does not dictate where the repair is made or how much is paid. Two estimates, they choose the lowest one.
They will probably go for this. It's a reasonable middle ground between a new hood (no way when they see the price of this baby!) and repairing your existing hood. A good used hood is much better than a new repo hood.
Hmmmmmm, this was some very interesting info, and makes much sense, much to the insurance companys dismay!!!! I called them today and let them know how I felt armed with this info. They are sending someone else out tomorrow to determine the extent of this structural damage. I likened it to a boat hull which has a "little crack" about to take off in some heavy chop. I think the point was made and well taken!!! Thanks again forum!!!!!!
My dad worked in a body shop all of his life and he always told me to stand my ground with adjusters. They would always try to save the insurance companies money (cheap reapir). Good luck.

I don't really see how the crack would spread if the repair is done right, and all of it is ground out.
My door is cracked... I'm gonna get it fixed, but I'm thinking the crack is bigger than what you can see... if the fiberglass is broken/weakened beyond the repaired area, then yeah, it could be a problem later on. Especially on a hood or door that gets slammed.

I will agree with Kevin on this. I cracked the CRAP out of my passenger door (caught the mirror on the gate and kept backing up, mirror didn't come off, but cracked the CRAP outta the door right there.) I put a piece of black duct tape over the crack, and it's been fine ever since, hasn't cracked anymore.
In theory if the repair is done correctly it won't spread, however in the real world you have better stand your ground and get a new hood, or if you have to get a used hood you need to have it checked very carefully,.....corvettes are prone to stress risers, and on a used hood these can be hiding under the paint and not visable until the paint has been removed. Don't let the s.o.b.'s weasel their way out of doing whats right! ...joe
