Default Need Help!

We spent the $142 and replaced the part. I posted a reply earlier to this but wanted to thank you all for your replies.
Have a Great Corvette Day!

Morning All!
We finally found the time to change the thermostat on my 85. When were done, we let the car idle for at least 30 minutes and it worked beautifully.

But, after we changed it out, I then didn't have any heat in the car. It would only blow cool air on heat and defrost. That didn't make sense since all we did was change out the thermostat. And the radiator and overflow were full. Not having heat is not good since it's cold again here in Utah.

We narrowed the problem down to the "hot water control valve or hot water shutoff valve". Ecklers says the item has been discontinued.

I just called the local chevy dealer, he can order me one, but the part itself cost $142 plus tax.

Can anyone help us?

Its for an '85 L98.

If you had heat before then it is probably nothing more than air trapped in the heater core. Easy fix and no $$$. Hope that is all it is.

Is the engine coming up to temperature, or staying cold?

If the engine's not heating up, the thermostat you just installed is sticking open.

If the engine's heating up normally, you're not getting any flow through the heater core. Could be trapped air, or a valve issue. I'd surely check the valve to see if it's open or closed before I ordered another one at $142, though.

Be well,

it sounds like you need to burb the air out of the system.

Yes, I did have some heat before we changed the thermostat. It didn't blow real good but I did have some. Now, it blows reals good but no heat.

The new thermostat works great. The engine comes up to temperature.

How do you burp the air out of the heater core????
We can try it to see if its the problem.

To burp the heater core, feel the two hoses going into the heater core, one, the inlet, will be hotter than the other (the outlet). Disconnect the outlet hose and run the engine until antifreeze starts to flow from the outlet. On later model vettes, and I am not sure about yours, there are valves you can open to bleed the air out of the system. I would recommend buying a set of manuals on your car, you can pick up a used set on ebay pretty inexpensively.

The fact that the HVAC blows harder now than before you did the t-stat job makes me suspect that something may not be functioning properly in your ductwork. Are you able to get any hot air by switching to Defrost, Bi-Level, etc? It may be that your air-mix door is staying set to Cold Air mode.

If both heater hoses are getting hot, it's probably not an issue of coolant flow through the core, but rather, one of airflow over the core.

Be well,

Default Fixed!

We went ahead and bought the $142 hot water shutoff valve from the dealer and replaced it last night. I now have heat and the t-stat works like a charm. I drove it this morning and it was about 20 degrees outside; the coolant temp got up to about 185-190 and the heater was blowing lots of hot air.

I have a picture but don't know how or the time to figure out how to post it. I took it from Yakko's pictures that he just posted and copied the part we replaced. If someone has a regualar email that I can send it to, maybe you could post it for me.

My work email is: michelle.day@hill.af.mil

Anyway, thanks for all of your replies.
