A bad MAF sensor will make it so that it will hardly run at all.
If you want to test it, simply unplug it and start the car. If it runs better then you have to look at the relays or the MAF sensor. It could be either or both.
I had a MAF sensor go bad on me. It would hardly run at all. I unplugged the MAF it ran fine. (check engine light on) Swapped the relays (one MAF relay the other burn-off relay) plugged the MAF sensor back in, still ran like crap. Replaced the MAF sensor, ran like normal again.
Hope this helps. Let me know if you need clarification on anything.
Where are the MAF relay and the burn-off relay located?
What is the usual life expectancy of a MAF sensor? I am sure that it would depend on a lot of different things, but I just replaced my MAF sensor about two years ago.
