Default Preventative Maintenance

I am having the water pump, upper and lower radiator hoses, serpentine belt, valve cover gaskets, distributor gasket, and the intake gaskets replaced on my 90 coupe by the dealer. Can you think of anything else that should be done while they are in there? I would hate to have all this work done and have something else go wrong that could have been changed at the same time. Would this be a good time to replace the injectors, thermostat, plugs, wires, etc, etc, etc...

If I was having all that work done I'd also change the plugs and the coolant along with the oil. Have the injectores cleaned.
However, if you don't have leaks where you're getting new gaskets, why change them?
If it ain't broken, it don't need fixing.
Just my humble opinion.

By a dealership? Seriously, I'd look hard and long for a shop that works on Vettes. The dealership will change whatever you want changed and take you to the cleaners. Your just opening yourself up for a lot of heartburn.

But if you must, ask them when was the last time they worked on a '90 vette then ask if the person that worked on it is still there. If not, your going to get someone new.

If you're not going to wrench it yourself, I'd take it to a Corvette speciality shop.

Some will even let you supply your OWN genuine AC/Delco parts, which you can get for less cash then they're going to charge you.

My intake gasket and pump are leaking which is the whole reason I brought it in. Unfortunately I am in a town in Oklahoma that doesnt seem to have anyone that is a good Vette guy, this is one of the drawbacks to being in the Army, they put us in the little dump towns.

I don't know anything about Lawton, OK, but this link might help you narrow a good Corvette shop down...

Can you think of anything else that should be done while they are in there?

You might consider valve seals while the covers are off

On the injectors, a new set of o-rings won't hurt especially if you have them clean or not. That in itself only takes about 10 minutes.

I'm not 100% up on L98 but besides just the two hoses, I'm sure there are a lot of other coolant related hoses to replace besides those two. I did the entire set on my LT1. But it may be a slightly different setup.

Plugs and wires wouldn't hurt depending on their current time in service.

Depending on your objectives, other items to consider is new fluid in the rear end with new posi additive.

You just can't catch everything in advance but seems like you hitting most of the major items.

Unless your familiar with a specialty vette place a good Chevy dealer should be just fine. Of course your going to be paying a premium but sounds like you don't have many choices. Some of those repairs may come with a limited warranty from the dealer and some may have lifetime, so be sure to have them indicate in writing what is warranted after their work. This prevents selective recall by the dealer when warranty work is needed.

Good luck and get that babe back on the road.

If you are replacing the intake gasket, you are going to be removing all the fuel injector system. That's alot of work. I would completely check the injectors, install new O rings, and change the fuel pressure regulator. I would also replace the EGR valve.

Thanks for all the input guys, I will think about all of it. Just an update, the pump that I got from Ecklers doesnt fit . I had to get one from O'reileys on short notice, I guess its better than the $25 one they had at Auto Zone. Anyway, now I have to HOPE that Ecklers will let me return the one that doesnt fit. It of course is covered in silicone and RTV but luckily no coolant was ran through it. Anyone had any dealings with Ecklers customer service???

My only advice is that you dont let the dealer do this, they'll rape you.

If the dealer is your only oprtion I would look into doing it yourself soldier.
Which base are you at. Do they have one of those MWR garages where you can rent out a bay and tools? You can also pay one of the mechanics to supervise/help out for cheap.

I wich I still had access to a base I would take advantage of those bays for rent. I think it was like $2 an hour, with a car lift and free disposal of oil and liquids, cant beat that.... of course if the dealership is your only option...thats going to hurt the ol beer fund. Thanks for serving

I didnt even think of that , thats why I love this place. I definetly do have an auto craft shop run by MWR, great idea. BTW, I'm at Fort Sill, OK. The closest vette specialist is in Dallas, TX which is about 2 1/2 to 3 hours away, not really an option. Any ideas or dealings with Ecklers returns? Hopefully they are reasonable. Thanks for everything guys and same to you Phantom90 (thanks for serving).

If you're going to replace the upper and lower radiator hoses you should also replace the heater hoses.

As long as the coolant is drained and the intake is off...replace the thermostat and gasket. Get one designed to fail open if possible - cheap insurance against a meltdown.
