See my new avatar pic - from the camera phone, but I was diggin' the tail lights on it.

The car I bought had some. Gave 'em away.

I have to stickup for Powerdrive's blackout look on his car. The best things I liked about the spray on blackout detailing he did are 2 reasons.
1) It maintained the curves and shapes the way the car was originally...ie - many of the black out covers look strange as they become flush with the rear bumper.
2) Instead of trying to get the lights to be seen through 2 peices of plastic, you can choose the amount of tint to be on the surface of the original lense covers.

I definitely love the way the blackout looks on his car!

I stay away from cars with blackouts, let someone else rear end them...

I gotta wonder though, if they're involved in a rear-end accident, how much of the blame they get assigned??? It's like having no brake lights during the day on most cars I've seen...

I like the original post. I agree. They look good, to some people's taste. But they are harder to see if the lights are on.

Just imagine this scenario: 4 pm, driving westbound, sun in the eyes, no dark glasses, not a very clean windshield, a little tired, thinking of something else other than driving. This is MOST people's cars---not ours---but most others.

Now, Corvette in front with black out tail lights hits the brakes.

Imagine the next picture... And I don't care if it's gay or straight...

i agree with you 99% of appearance mods are stupendously unbelievably silly/ugly, the exception being NICE (not crazy azz) wheels and a NICE (tasteful) paintjob. wings are at the top of the heap in ridiculousness

I think they look good, but I'm already concurned about out braking the people behind me. If I ever did it, I would have to go with those LED lights.

I think they look sick on black vettes!

I cant beleive no one has asked you this yet but where did you get this switch? I would like for my lights to be brighter when I brake as well. Seems that even as loud as my car is n one sees it because it is so low and black

Default Blacked out lights

Big mistake. It's bad enough that many people are getting rear-ended because there are so many drivers using cell phones. This just increases your chances of get rear-ended. My .02

That's an excellent point. A claim may be denied if the rear brake lenses have been altered. Something to seriously consider. Not worth the risk.

There is still a third brake light, and if you aren't tailgating you should be able to tell whether a car is slowing down in front of you are not. Now I know I'm preaching to the choir and can't trust everyone else to drive this way, but if you rearend someone, it probably wasn't do to not seeing the taillights regardless if blacked out or not working. I'd imagine they'd still be at fault, but you might get slaped with a fine if illegal in your state (which is probably most of them). It would be nice to know though...hopefully I won't find out do to someone rearending me (I'll be installing a set as soon as they arrive).

... without reading all the comments I agree that how these things became legal on the road is beyond me. The industry goes to great links to improve lens quality, type of lamp, third stop lamps, etc all the improve your visibility both from the driver to the other people operating around you. Then people come in and darken the lamps so you can barely tell if they are on.

I hate them and firmly believe they should not be legal for use on the streets.

I don't get it................

The day I bought my Vette, I had to follow the previous owner 50 miles (long story). Anyway, it was a bright, sunny day -- and I had no problem at all seeing the brake lights, turn signals, etc. Also, since I've owned the car I've had no complaints from anyone who has followed me, and I've been on a number of cruises.

I did have to remove them for the state inspection, but I popped them right back on and have never been hassled by police.

I thought the blackouts looked good when I first saw the car -- and I still do.

I've got em, and brake lights shine thru very easily during the day.

I think the problem is the spray on ones, people spray it on way way too thick, and its hard to tell then.
