Have done headliners in other cars but I don’t know what the proper procedure for this replacement is. Have had the top off but don’t see anything that pryes off easily or unscrews. The local top guy makes a big deal of it but I know I’m only lacking the basic information. They say the headliner material is more expensive and thinner than the normal headliner – OK. The GM manual offers no info on this that I could find. Anyone who got the real info on this would be greatly appreciated.
I have a scan that covers replacement, but not the materiel required.
If you would like it my e-mail is lsylvestri@sbcglobal.net
This was a great help when I did mine. Thanks for the article!
fabric was $12 at Joanne Fabric and the 3m adhesive was $10 at a parts store. remember to get all of the old foam off of the insulation board before you spray the 3m and add another 1/4 inch to your cutout even if you dont think you need it. Easier to tuck a little more under than come up short and have to re-do the whole thing.

I took mine down to a local automotive upholostery shop and they used the original hard backing and they used a foam and material that is exactly like what the factory used. In my opinion, it was the best 61 dollars I've ever spent...drop it off today, pick it up tomorrow, done.
That's one of those things in my mind like paint and windshields that should be left to the pros for a perfect job.. It's simply not worth 30 dollars to do it yourself.

I guess it's whatever your comfortable with. If your happier paying someone to do it... then do so. I've never thought of headliners as very difficult and never had one come out looking sub-par. Personally, thats a job I would not farm out... but then I'd probably farm out something else that you wouldn't ;-)
And redoing the headliner in my 84 cost me a total of $8.
Personally - since the cost is so minimal (under $100) I would drop it off and have it done. I do know from previous experience of doing my own that not using the highest level of 3m adhesive ( and we are talking over $16/can) meant I had to redo the headliner that I struggled with on my last try! If I paid myself a dollar an hour it would have cost me more that $80 (all right, maybe it only seemed that way - but it would have been close)!
I had never done one before I did my 91 about a month ago. Ordered the kit from www.madvet.com/, one kits has enough for 2 trys,..only needed one try. Came out great. Very simple job. Don't be intimidated. Did it in less than 2 hrs.
Plus you'll have the satisfactiion of doing it yourself.
Good luck
Did mine a couple weeks ago and it only took about $20 for the material (from a local upholstery shop) and the spray glue (Kragen headliner glue) and about 3 hours labor. I think I spent more time getting the thing out and cleaned off than I did putting the new material on. Go for it. This is one of those jobs that you can constantly look up at and think "damn I'm good".
All great information and will utilize it when I do the job. I know headliners can be tricky and would probably pay $61 for a pro job but I got quoted $100, $160 and $225. I know use of proper materials is important or things fall and you do it again. What I want to know is do you just pull of the old headliner material OR does the actual headliner (the shell) get removed also. If you only take off the material, its not obvious to me at this time how you would get the new material back on and under the existing shell. There is almost no clearance between the headliner shell and the roof pieces that surround it.
