Are you referring to the Passive Keyless Entry lamp on the Drivers Information Center or the Security lamp left of the tach?
If it is the PKE lamp, it functions as follows: If the PKE is On (passive mode) it will light for 2 seconds when you put the key in ign and turn it to the Run position. If PKE is off (non-passive) the lamp will not come on at all. The lamp serves as an indicator as well during programming of the transmitter.
The Security lamp reminds you to arm the theft deterrent system (UTD) by flashing when the ignition is in the LOCK position and the doors are opened. It keeps flashing until you arm the UTD by locking the doors using the door lock button or the PKE system. Once the system is armed, the lamp stops flashing and remains lit. When the last door is shut, the light will stay on for two seconds then go out. It will also remain lit if the hatch is left open but the UTD system is still armed. (The latter would apply if you have PKE in passive mode, close your doors with the hatch open, when the transmitter is out of range the doors will lock and horn sounds, the lamp remains lit until you close the hatch.)
The PKE module is under the dash just behind the Driver Information Panel. The Shop Manual gives detailed instructons on troubleshooting it. First remove the dash and then it tells you where to jumper in power and ground wires to test the system. The Shop Manual also tells you how to get PKE trouble codes. The module is really called Remote Control Power Door Lock Reciever. I bought one for my 93 that I did not need, $350.00.
