Drove my 89 tonight for the first time in about two weeks. Warmed the car up and when my wife came out to get in she said " something is burning!" I did not smell it until she opened the door. GAG!
This happened about six (6) months ago also. this time it was during the daylight hours. I was warming the car in the garage, when I saw smoke comming from under the heat barrier that covers the exhaust manifold on the driver side. Same horrible smell! I am guessing mice. I have seen mouse turds on the intake manifold for some time now. Have not seen any evidence inside the car. I keep dryer sheets inside the cabin.
Anyone had this happen? This is not a smell you will soon forget!
Oh boy dont tell me that, years ago mice was dead in my 91 merc sable, u wont believe iam talking about 250 bucks as paid to a mechanic to open up whole dash, finally we found out but still afte cleaning i used to get that smell for months. so, for months i have to drive with windows open and put air freshner thing every day. U will be lucky if that mice did not went inside otherwise .........good luck man i feel ur exp, that smell make u vomit, hope its not that bad as it was for me.
but not ON the engine, spread them on the floor under the car.
I have a similar but worse problem and after thousands of dollars spent to exterminators and every poison under the sun what actually keeps them out is a few boxes of good ole fashioned Moth ***** ($2.99 a box at the Walmart)
I still have 1 stubborn bastard in my garage cause every now and then he manages to find "Packing Peanuts" and he constructs himself a "Serta Perfect Sleeper" ontop of my intake.

I had some rat problems in my home a number of years ago, but nature sort of took care of it for me, while sealing up access holes when I got to one small hole left to finish I was met face to face with a yellow rat snake. EEEk. Well I left him/her be and closed the hole up months later.
Mr snakey took care of the remaining problems for me and went on his merry way. No furry critters since.
Now if we could just train the eagles across the lake to ****** up all the roaming cats in the neighborhood that would be great. (I'm not a cat hater but when people have half dozen cats and let them all run wild the cats just kill everything birds squirrels etc for no reason - it be nice to see nature deal with the problem.)
Same problem with winter storage here in R.I. also. Moth ***** the last couple of years solved the problem. The little bast**** used to make themselves a fine nest in the gas grille, my lawnmower engine, and the vette manifold. Horrible stench when they fry up!!!!! Also, watch for their little nests heating up, as they can ignite!!!
Never had it happen to the Vette, but my mother did have a mouse make a nest in the heater A/C blower motor in her car. It chewed away the plastic "squirrel cage " fan, and when she turned on the blower, it made one hell of a racket.
She came to visit me about a week later. The mouse had "expired" and left a nasty stench in the HVAC ducting of the vehicle. A quick trip to the junkyard and an hour of wrenching later, I pulled his bloated stinky little corpse out and replaced the motor.
Several cans of Lysol later, the smell was finally bearable.
For those of you up north who have to store their cars in the winter, use mothballs, mouse traps, etc. The furry little peckerheads will also eat seat upholstery, wiring insulation, rubber hoses, you name it.
Had a mice infestation in my oven once. Damn things had a nest right underneath the bottom burner; talk about cozy. Took about 15-20 traps to get all of them. Once they nest, it's hard to get rid of them. Thanks for the "moth ball's" tip. I'll try it.
