Well, I finally made time to remove the old broken ribbon and replace it with a new ribbon, it only took about 2 hours. I am finally getting to the point where I am not afraid to work on my car. I feel on top of the world. I think I will pat myself on the back. Just wanted to share.
I'm trying to stay in the '94 to '96 era, but there is this silver/gray '84 that has some sentimental value for sale near me. Are these window ribbons a bad system? Is there a way to retrofit the newer guts inside the older doors, and is there any advantage to that?
I got the ribbon from Mid-America and you can upgrade to the newer type of window mechanism, just too expensive at this time for me. Thanks for the encouragement.
Yes, the early cars can be retrofitted with the later regulators. You drill a hole or two on the bottom of the door for the new regulator and reverse the motor wiring on the passenger motor. The new regulators should come with instructions for putting them in the early doors. The dealer even uses the later ones on the earlier cars. I don't think you can even order a ribbon style regulator anymore unless someone has some NOS stuff. These regulators seem to get more and more expensive each year. You can buy a used one for $75 to $100 each. Not much goes wrong with them, maybe a motor once in awhile but the scissor style mechanism itself it pretty bullet proof.
