I have looked around a little in the last day or two and I do not see a LT-1 or LT-4 crate engine. I guess it is discontiued? Is this typical for GM? Just when these engines are breaking, discontiue the crate engines? Looking for so expert guidance here on what to do. I understand it is just a case of "How much Money" but I want to do this the smart way.
Before I bought my 87, I owned a 74. A wealthy friend knew my 74 had 140k miles and it was about time I do something with the engine as it was consuming oil and had low, but even compression. My friend had paid for a rebuild on a 350 long block but got rid of the car it was to go in and the rebuilder wanted the stored engine out of his basement. My friend offered the engine if I helped him get it out of the basement which I did. In a large garage at work, my friend had every tool imaginable and I used the lift, engine hoist, Snap On tools, engine stand and in 1 1/2 hours had my engine out and on the stand to remove everything needed for the rebuild. He even had a wash stand to clean all my accessories. My expenses were for gaskets, filters, etc. and the next day the rebuild went back in and ran the first crank.
I bought my friend a Ruger 77/22 rifle and he told me I didn't have to do that. I replied, "and you didn't have to give me an engine either". Out of pocket expenses was about $350.
I have seen 4bolt main short blocks in GM High Tech Performance for around $1700. You could then buy the LT4 heads and cam package for around 2300 and have a complete motor. Just food for thought
I pulled mine, tore it down, had a machine shop do all the dirty work to the block, crank and heads (boring, porting, dipping, new freeze plugs, etc) and then we put it all back together ourselves. Saved a ton of money and got a TON of new race parts to replace all the stock parts. I spent maybe $1500 total on everything (including machine shop labor and ALL aftermarket parts) and have a MUCH better engine now

Used Engine?
Crate Engine?
Rebuild?
Theres one on E-bay it says its a NOS OEM engine. NOS (New Old Stock) Its a long block, and its in Weldon Ca, tiny desert town between Lake Isabella and Ridgecrest Ca.
I swapped my motor out in an 87. I had a local shop build a 4 bolt 350/350 all roller for $3700.00. i had to modify the tall valve covers to clear the wiper motor. Do yourself a favor and change the oil pressure switch while the engine is out. corvetts are tight, tranny bolts motor mounts are tight. motor mounts unbolted from block so you can move engine forward or you wont get it out. You are in for a treat if you dont have a lift. I had to pull the motor twice because of a lifter problem in the span of a month.
