Has anyone ever had problems programming a new key fob to work with their car? I had problems with an old key fob with a broken shell. I had used Krazy glue to hold it together, and it stopped working, so I figured I had shorted something out. I replaced the battery to see if that was the problem - no luck.
I bought a used fob off of eBay, and put a new battery in it before attempting to program it. Followed the owner's manual instructions multiple times, can never get the light to stay on (indicating successful programming). Seems suspicious that both key fobs cannot be programmed, so I'm inclined to suspect that something else is causing the problem. Is there anything that you guys can suggest? I've tried moving the key fobs FAR away, but doesn't seem to help. I've turned the key to off and to the middle spot, and each time the PKE light flashes (as expected). I just can't seem to get them to program. I've tried pushing key fob buttons to *encourage* it to program.
The PKE module is under the dash just behind the Driver Information Panel. The Shop Manual gives detailed instructons on troubleshooting it. First remove the dash and then it tells you where to jumper in power and ground wires to test the system. The Shop Manual also tells you how to get PKE trouble codes. The module is really called Remote Control Power Door Lock Reciever.
I wrote all this up a while ago and it keeps being ignored because I guess it isn't easy. When something doesn't work you may actually have to troubleshoot it God forbid!
ALLT4 - Thanks! I haven't ever been afraid of troubleshooting, so this should be perfect. I searched and tried all the suggestions that I could find, but never got a hit on this thread. I'll go over it in the next day or two and give my results.
I also have a contact in the GM Service Department who let me sign out the 1994 Service Manual, so I should be well-equipped.
Again - your thread looks like exactly what I needed.
I don't mean to sound mean or like a smart alec but I see folks have problems time after time and they usually follow the easiest suggested reapir because it's just that, easy. Easy isn't always right, and in some instances can make mask a problem or make it worse.
Here's another post of mine some time back with the schematic, maybe this will be all you need.
BTW, after I fixed my PKE system I couldn't be any more happy with it. The system works exactly like the factor intended it to now, plus it's still the original system and there's no hacking of the wiring or car to mess with. I have no idea why folks hate them (PKE) so much, these are older cars and will have problems come up in time. Anything mechanical or electrical you interface with that often will eventually break, the weakest part of consumer electronics is usually it's interface with the outside world.

Any ideas?
As far as the original transmitter not programming, my guess is your seeing the PKE lamp continue to flash when it is brought into range. That is normal it means its frequency is already recognized by the system.
As far as the new transmitter. One mistake many people make is the ignition key position, they don't quite get it to the RUN or OFF position during the sequences. So it escapes from programming mode. Make sure you only have one transmitter in range at one time, I'd go at least 10 feet if not more. Keep the previous known working transmitter well out of range.
When you start to program the new transmitter how many times does the PKE lamp flash? (It will flash the number of the transmitter being programmed, that is once for the first one, two times for the second and three times for the third. You can only program up to three transmitters.
I picked up a service manual on ebay for $20 + shippping. Some of us love the PKE ans others don't use it. Mine is turned off. It works fine but I just don't need it.
