check engine light

i am somewhat new the the C4 world as far as mechanicals and diagnostic, so i still have tons to learn. My check engine light came on about 2 weeks ago and the shop scanned it (for Free!) and said catalyst inefficency, so i tried to replace the O2 sensor first, just in case, as this is a whole lot cheaper! and it came on again. I have heard these cars are known for dumping too much fuel at start up or something like that, so it is putting fuel in the cats. Are the cats shot? or is this a common thing like i heard. and if there is a problem, how safe is it to wait a few weeks before i fix it.
I have heard peoples nightmares about cloged cats and dont want to be the next victim!
car is a 96 LT4
TIA

Welcome to the show
Mine came on when it was cooler outside but my Vette has been tuned to set the spark all the way up so it leaned the gas some. The back O2 does not get hot enuff, and the new 10% soybean gas does not burn as hot as the old gasTIA

So im gunna take that as good news, looks like long tubes and R/T bullet cats are just around the corner
