....Also, if anyone can get a face-to-face with the owners it'd help clear up a lot of this....
I doubt it, these guys are running around lying in an effort to drive up the price of their Vette. I'm sure they know exactly what they have, an LT1 car with an LT4 manifold. As for the heads and cam, I have my doubts.
On LT4's the eight digit is a 5, not a 4. I think you could modify an LT1 to make a LT4 with an automatic trans, but why? Do you need another hand to mess with your passenger or to reload?
I have to disagree with that. Not having any literature in front of me, nor owning an LT4, I must say the eighth digit is a 4 on the LT4 cars. The "5" you saw is most likely the eleventh digit. Not trying to stir up any crap, but please check again.
Also, regarding a pic above. All 1,000 1996 GrandSports are Admiral Blue w/white stripes. That picture is of a custom Vette. It may, in fact, be an LT4, but it is not a GrandSport.

I know, I was kidding about the GS pick :D Someone made a comment about putting ZR1 badges on an L98 and that's the first image that came to mind. To each his own, I guess.
I know this car. It is indeed an LT4. The Tach is 8 Grand, it has a Dana 44 rearend. The door handles were going to be the CE colored door handles, but that didn't make it into production, though these were "leaked" onto this car. The PCM has a custom prg. It has a higher than stock stall converter, a manual backbone. Whether the car is real or not, I can't say, but lets just say it was all done in BG.
Only a verified build sheet will settle this one. If it ain't on the sheet, I don't care how they protest that it was a special in house deal, it ain't for real IMHO.

Since that zoom of the EGR system looks like an EGR system, then this must not be the AutoLT4 that I am familiar with. It definitely did not have an EGR system. Based on the description of this car having body colored door handles, I mistook it for a car a former friend (original owner) had, which was a CE Automatic with an LT4 engine. Disregard all of my previous info being attached to the car in the picture, it was intended to be directed to the lt4 which my friend used to own.
(He now owns a Red C5 Convertible)
Interesting tidbit. With the stock stall convertor, the LT4 in an Auto car was slower than a Auto LT1. The swap to the higher stall and the adoption of the export PCM program corrected this and put the car into the solid 12's. Another reason for the export PCM program was to account for lack of an EGR. The stock manual PCM program would not work with the LT4 in an auto.
do you still have contact with this friend? It would interesting if He/she could run the VIN for a build sheet. Even if its not the car at Carlisle, it would be an important bit of Corvette history if indeed there were "export" models with the LT4 and Automatic. I would doubt that an "export" model would bother with a custom EGR fitment. I would expect that many enthusiasts would have records of their past corvettes.
Yup, still have contact with my friend. Though you won't see either him or myself posting anything specific here about the LT4 Auto until both of us have retired from our current jobs.
Now trivia question how many AutoZ06's were made and sold to the public?

The quest is a foot! Do y'all work for GM or something? saw your profile. Shame that you can't document what you know in today's corporate environment. :( ;) :chevy
I have to agree with Scott.. One other thing you can check (if you can get someone to pull the guy away somw how) is to check the block suffix.. the LT1 was ZXA and the LT4 was ZXD

Aww...come on. Clearly the current owners of this car aren't shy about showing it and having it in magazines. What do you have/know about this car?
