Obviously this is for you flowmaster guys out there. A friend of mine has a 95 Z-28 that has been set up with dual flowmasters. It's ugly because the car was not set up for the mufflers to be mounted the way they are, but man it sounds GOOD. Aggressive rumble when idling, not too terrible at speed, mainly because you can manipulate it with the 6-spd.
I've about decided that my car is too quiet. I can't afford headers right now, but I can certainly afford a set of flow-masters. I think they would really bring out my cam and give me the rumble I'm looking for. My mechanic knows the guy who owns the local Midas, he'd install them for $20. They even sell a chrome version of the LT1 exhaust tips that I really like.
What do you guys think? I think mine will sound even better than the Camaro because I actually have a dual exhaust. What do you guys think about that? The center resonator in the middle? Does it ruin the sound, should be replaced with an X pipe?
My mechanic is more of a Camaro person, so it's kinda funny what he told me yesterday. He told me that he heard a vette with a mild cam and some flowmasters, said it was awesome, so thus mine must sound awesome as well. He knew it was an L98 car, but he didn't realize that they were still a single exhaust setup. I told him and he couldn't believe how good it sounded.
I'm seriously thinking about doing it this weekend. The delta flow 40 series looks like my best option, they are not quite as loud as the normal 40 series, but they don't make a center in / center out 2.5" in the normal series. The delta flow is supposed to be quieter inside the car, but still pretty noisy outside. Even better
I'm just tired of having some ricer with a folgers exhaust rev at me and nothing I can do about it. Oh sure I can outrun him, but you can't hear my exhaust over the constant fart note of their car. I want them to fart at me, so I can rev back at them and blow them off the road.
What (if anything) are you running for cats? I just removed my main one about a week and a half ago, and it really "angered" the exhaust note even more.
Right now my exhaust system is totally stock. It will probably remain that way until I get long tube headers. It's not worth hacking apart my stock system. Personally I HATE the smell of exhaust when it doesn't go through a cat first. It gets in your clothes and stays forever. I'll remove the cats when I do headers, but before then it's kinda pointless.
I hope to get flowmasters this weekend, a new Mcleod clutch next month, and doug rippe long tube headers next summer, at that point I'll remove all the emmissions crap and get the computer programmed not to look for it. If I can find a 52mm throttle body at some point for a good price I'll pick that up as well.
I just want to get into the 12's. The car would probably do it now, but the clutch is stopping it from getting there, with a new clutch and some headers I should be well into the 12's.
Cool, LT1's don't have pre-cats, so it's all or nothing. Hmm, I just had a thought... I get off early on Friday's, maybe I can get my exhaust worked out
BEFORE the weekend.
I REALLY want that new clutch. What's weird is that my car can bark second gear almost every time, and I can catch third sometimes as well, but I can have a run at the track with no wheelspin on drag radials and still have a bad 60' time, with a good MPH. With no wheelspin then it's gotta be the clutch. I even let my mechanic drive it (he's good) no spin, good mph, slow time?? Gotta be the clutch, the dyno proves that the HP is there.
If the Flowmasters are too loud for you after a while, you can always switch to Walker Dynomax "Super Turbo" mufflers to get rid of the low-rpm resonance in the rear of your coupe. Get your hearing tested before it's gone!
You know Nathan, I might want to just mention that you might not get a loud exhaust w/ the flowmasters. I went thru this situation(anguish) and I have to admit, I am not satisfied w/ the flowmasters which are on my car now. They are the ones made for the vettes and have 1 inlet w/ two working outlets. After I put them on, I said " is that all?". I called Flowmaster's tech line and had extensive conversations. My muffler is a 3 chamber. You see, I had a 91 Z28 before my vette and that thing had FM mufflers also but they were 2 chamber race mufflers. OH how that thing sounded GOOD!! I miss those. Of course, FM has innovated newer technology since then, so I don't actually know much about the delta series. But guess what, I am going to take mine off for a test and see how eliminating them alltogether would sound. You should try taking yours off just for a few hours and drive around testing all the rpm ranges. At least you'll have a reference point that way. Don't get me wrong, FM's are great mufflers, I guess I am just picky and too aggressive. Just my two cents, but definitely keep us updated!! Goodluck and have fun.
Alright guys, I have the flowmaster mufflers. Well sorta, my mechanic has them in the back of his truck. I'm gonna go pick them up tonight. The local muffler shop will install them for $20. The irritating part is that the LT1 style chrome tips are $56 each at Midas. That's more than any Folgers muffler they sell!! My mechanic thinks he might be able to get them for $25 each. I guess in the worst case I would just have to re-use my old tips.
I picked up a BRAND NEW pair of FM 40 series delta flow 3-chambers for $120 ;) They still have the sticker on the inlet. Only problem is that they are offset offset instead of center center which would be ideal, but my LT1 tips are sanded and painted and I'm going to have the entire system from the headers back re-done tomorrow. I figure there'll be a little bit of fabrication required due to the offset offset design... I hope it's not a huge problem.
BTW I saw a Vette the other day with these same mufflers mounted in stock location without any tips...it looked wrong...
I hope they sound alright for you. Everything I have heard says stay away from the three chambers. The onese I have are Flowmaster part number 42540. They are 2 chamber, 2.5" center in/center out. The odd part is that none of the parts places like Summit or Jegs will acknowledge that these exist, however a local speed and custom shop had them in stock. I've got them sitting in my bedroom, I just need to get them installed Saturday. Today and tomorrow are going to be long days. Too bad I don't own a muffler shop.
I know a guy with a 3 chamber muffler for a Camaro, coupled with his headers, sounds like a Mustang.
Eliminators you mean? Well, pure and simple I don't like that sound. A car with healthy exhaust sounds good. A car with no mufflers, well it sounds like a car with no muffler. I don't like that sound. To much snap crackle pop. IMHO I don't want my car to sound like Jethro's pickup truck, which we have too many of in my area. I want a deep rumble, not a raspy sputter.
Nathan,
Let us know how the mufflers work out. I've noticed that Flowmaster's
website (http://www.flowmastermufflers.com) does not list that part #
on their corvette application chart. However it is listed
on their complete list of mufflers. The muffler maybe intended for some other
application. I hope they work out for you. I am interested in the results.

Black on black LT4
Well I got my flowmasters installed Saturday. Upon my mechanic's recommendation I took it to an exhaust shop in the middle of the Ghetto. That place rocks, they were cheap and the guy did a great job on the install. This place lets you actually walk around/under the car and make sure it's the way you want it.
As for the sound? Damn. I like it, it can resonate inside badly given the wrong gear/RPM combination, but being a 6-spd I can correct for that easy enough.
My only complaint so far is that it's been raining too much for me to drive it. :mad
