I have now gone through 5 in 11 months. The original one cost $160.00 I keep exchanging them. I'm tired of a trip to the dealership every 2 months and having to re-code. Is there another place or company that makes the passive remotes?

They test the key fob everytime, and it's bad Right now it will manually open the hatch and the passenger, but not the driver side. Passive doesn't work at all. Maybe my garage is located over a negative vortex?
Hmm...after 5 fob replacements, something tells me it ain't the fob. (Is it possible to install a too powerful battery and screw it up?) Hope you get it fixed soon. It's a neat feature. Luv my PKE.
I bought the car in "98" it had the original fob that lasted over 2 years. Then they changed the design from a snap together fob, to a screwed together fob. This last one my daughter dropped, I had only had it 1 week. And now it doesn't work.

Very strange... I've never seen that many fobs go bad before... How do you use/store your keys??? I'm thinking something about the enviornment you keep them in has to be causing it...
Oh, and there should be a section in your owners manual to program the fobs to the car, I thought I remembered seeing that in there somewhere...

The keys are either in my pocket of hanging up on a key rack. I'm leaning towards the negative vortex, since I seem to be the only one

Have you tried a trip to radio shack pick up a new battery 23-189 CR3450? If the catch on the older style broke, you can still use it. When I replace the battery I put to drops of super glue near the upper edges and close holding it together for a minute. When I need to replace the battery a small blade screwdriver pops it back open. I also have a new style with the screw attach, it didn't last long and became intermittent. So I stowed it and when back to the original. Remember that every time it moves it cycles on for 17 seconds so a lot of constant motion might be causing it to drain down the battery.
Jet-Jock, thanks for the reply. I have tried new batteries. They always check the fob @ the dealership and it always test BAD. I wish I would have kept the old one. I had black electrical tape holding it together. My husband blew up! Corvette owners don't have electrical tape on their keys! Oh well. I think the guys at the parts department are beginning to think I'm a stalker
When you get your next one wrap it in bubble wrap covered with foil and place it in a box for safe keeping. I know it makes it hard to use, but at least it will be safe. LOL Also more pics of your car, it looks nice.
1. If you hold the "door" button down for more than 2 seconds, it turns off (or on) the PKE system.
2. Also, IF you want to change the system so it only unlocks one door, you can do that by doing a thing with the electric lock button.
Don't laugh at this, I've done both a time or two by accident. Getting the fob out of my pocket or putting stuff in the back. I've found most folks at the dealership don't really know what to do about vette problems. As far as I can tell, there is no procedure to check the fob, I really think it's the above stuff.
I've found that IF the fob works the hatch, it's a programming problem. Ain't got the memory on the changing the door lock (from 1 door to 2) but, I can look it up in the shop manual if you need.
I'd highly appreciate it. Never have passengers, so never a reason to only unlock the passenger door.
Put key in ignition..donot turn "on". Hold door button until you get the door opening sequence you want. Sometimes it takes a few shots to get it right.
I've got the manual on how to program, that is always my 1st thought when it stops. The goobers @ the parts deparment always "test" the fob (like I'm lying) And they always say "yup, it's dead" Maybe it is a heat thing?

Red Dwarf!!! HOLY $HIT!!!!! I just went out with my manual and re-programmed again. Set the fob 10 ft away and then bring in to range, yada, yada, yada. Didn't work
SO, I try your "put the key in the ignition, don't turn on and press the door button" OH MY GOD!!!! It worked! I could kiss you all over!!!!
Why on earth have those MORONS @ the parts department been telling me ALL those ^$@#!$^%#@!! fobs were bad!!???
Sometimes the intelligence of the system is too simple for our brains, we tend to over think the issue. When it's a simple matter of interpreting what it is telling us.
I mentioned about another post as I seem to remember a discussion about what the annunciations were indicating. (Disregard if it wasn't you, as we have a lot of these types of posts, so it tends to get everyone at one point or another.)
There is no such thing as re-programming a transmitter. When you enter programming mode, if it doesn't respond to the transmitter coming into range it means that your PKE system already recognizes that transmitter. Removing the battery connection will not erase the memory of the frequencies programmed.
For all those reading this thread, you can program up to three transmitters. The system will tell which number your programming by the number of times it flashes. That is single flashes for the first one, double flashes for the second and so forth.
There are different modes which you can set by either holding the door button on the transmitter for a couple of seconds with the key out of the ignition or with the key in the ignition. The former turns passive mode on and off, and the latter sets whether it opens just the driver's door or both when in range.
If the transmitter operates the hatch or unlocks a door with the button, then you know for certain it is programmed to your system. You then would need to check whether it was enabled or not. In your case it was not, it was in non-passive mode.
I'm wondering if you had the key fully in the ignition when you pressed the button or if it was almost in, because it sounds like you enabled passive mode on which is the key out button hold program.
Either way glad you got it back up and working again. It's frustrating knowing your Vette has convenience features that are not working properly.
