Ok after about a week of driving around with my newly rebuilt tranny, and rewiring the fans to auto, I drove up and parked today in the scalding hot friggin weather to get some gas and I noticed a knock from my passenger side of the hood. Open the hood and Ive got coolant shootin/bubbling out from both the reservoir and the fill cap. I've got a 90' btw. Just a few minutes prior to this I went to the tranny place and took her for the post-week inspection test drive with the installer of the tranny and everything seemed fine.(I took her in for an intermittent check engine light which by his diagnostic scanner said was the EGR pipe/valve which he said should only affect emissions if anything) I dont know if the two are somehow related but Ive been noticing since I wired for the auto fans, they werent coming on today or rarely at that. This afternoon we pulled out the temp switch thinking it was the culprit and installed a 195 degree(I know it was supposed to be 180 but I dont know if thatll really make that big of a difference). I took out the auto fans as nothing was coming on with them wired. Now the fans came on briefly but the car seems to still overheat as I was watching the gauge and it comes near close to 260 not spiking though, so I drove it home and it gradually went down but not by much. Im thinking its just the air as Im moving thats cooling it. I dont know if the fans are really coming on as they should. I had fan problems before but they wouldnt shut off. Now they wont go on. Or atleast seem like they dont. I replaced the relays and the relay connector plug about a year ago. But the fans shouldnt even be the biggest issue although they may be the culprit. But I still dont think it should be heating up like that. It isnt severely spiking, but it gradually goes up and hesitates to go down on the temp gauge. What else could be causing this overheating issue and what else should I check?
I disagree. I think your fans are the MOST likely culprit. You'll need to idle the car and watch them to be sure they are coming on, and if not, find out why. At speeds below 35 MPH in warm weather your fans are your only relief from overheating.
i have a 96 been having heating problems myself.(my car) Check the front of your radiator I never checked it and when I did boy what a ton of leaves and grass bags it was not a pretty sight .my temp drop immediately after cleaning .I was running 235-240 in stop and go traffic. Now Im running 225 or so with a/c in Houston, Texas. Its been close to 100 deg.
here.
I have had the same problem. I cleaned, flushed, checked the fans and still got overheated. I found a very knowledgable guy from a corvette shop bet me he could solve my problem. I took him on and I lost. It was a very simple fix. The culprit was a sensor. Im not sure, but i think it was called the A/C clutch fan sensor. It is located on the low press A/C line by the radiator resivoir. there is also one on the high side and we changed them both. It solved my problem instantly. but i wasnt able to get the hair back that i lost trying to figure it out.
