Every once in a while, when I first start up my 86 vette my digital dash is blank. When I hit the dash-board it light's up and every thing is fine, I know this sounds like a dumb post or question but is this normal for a older car to do this ?

Are the Blinker signals and Bright light indicator real bright??
If so there is a short in your system. Search for a thread on how to fix it.
Let me type this yet one more time. The two circuit boards in the cluster plug together through a single row of pins on the front board into a socket on the rear board. The end pin closest to the center of the circuit board carries the backlight lamp current and an age relaxed spring on the socket causes connection resistance and the lamp current through this resistance causes enough heat to unsolder the pin. Resoldering the pin will not cure this problem. I fixed my 87 about 6 years ago by soldering a short piece of small insulated hookup wire from the pin to the socket and I have had no trouble with it since. Stop hitting the dash before you do some damage to the circuit boards!
The hi beam and turn signal lights come on because you have lost the ground connection to the cluster circuit boards and their ground current goes through these lamps keeping them on. Go here for some help with that problem: www.batee.com
