If your car is auto it allready has one. 1800rpm is the stock one for 93, 2400-2600rpm would suit an LT1 pretty good. Have a look here and read, it tells you all you need to know:

Well, your car already has one in it. The purpose is to transfer the energy from your engine to your transmission. It is the link between the two in a automatic transmission. When you say you want to add one, I assume you are meaning a "more aggressive" one which would mean a higher stall speed. If you engine is stock, you will not need anything more than a 2200-2400 stall. It will help a little on "off-the-line" launches, however it may feel a little "loose" during normal cruising.

I am sure someone else will chime in too....

When gently applying the throttle, especially climbing a hill the rpms tend to flair up slightly. This contributes to a loose or "slushy" feeling On a mild converter, it is not much of an issue. With a very high stall converter, it can be annoying.

It'll feel like the transmission is slipping, which it is actually. Its a weird feeling.

Thats why i wouldnt go higher than 2400-2600 for a street driven car.

Stock TC in later years is closer to 1500rpm, and it should be much much higher.

Hey Will, mine's getting rebuilt right now and I went with the Hughes 2500 stall converter. My tranny burned up on the way home from the drags at firebird when we were there last time. I hope it gives me a better launch and is still good on the street. Seeya, Robert

I don't mean to hijack this thread but...I just installed the Maddog Godfather tranny purchased from Sami w/2800 stall converter. I have 2.73 rear gears and now OD is very deep. 1600 rpms@ 65mph deep. Shifting from OD to D gains about 5-600 rpms. While driving on surface streets and car goes from D to OD the engines sounds/feels like it's lugging bad...TC cable is adjusted properly. Should I just get used to driving in D anytime I'm below 60 mph? Tranny shifts solid and seems to be proper intervals, 1-2 happens very quickly but no slippage, etc. Take care, Larry

Larry: mine has 3.54 gears and at 75 mph rpm will be at 2500, in a 30-45 mph speed on my 9.5" 3000 stall i have no choice but to shift it to D, i talked tp pete about this and he said its normal usually it did on his car too. Just consider its normal and set tV cable right buddy. Glad it worked for u i was little nervous though.

I had recommend u about 2400-2600 rpm lockup 12" stock style, previously i had good result with B n M Torq monster 2000-2200 rpm stall but i had recommend u B n M hole shot.

ask pete K he knows a good shop does only TC's close to him, let them make one for u.

The one i had now is 9.5" 3000 stall lockup TC bought from transmisionhead.com, i will tell u its just radical from a stop light, which i like it but if i had a passenger he may not like it.

About Transgo shift kit i just love it,

Buy a TC 2400-2600 rpm (200-350)
transgo shift kit (110)
.500 boost valve (which is cheap).
4th gear only lock up kit (cheap again $15)

I assume u done this at mech place so expect 500-600 for labor, ur whole tranny has to come out.

Pm pete he built mine, just love it. sami.

sami.
Its your car!! Forget the passengers!!!!

For JrsTurn:
Can the TC lockup settings be changed by putting a new chip in the ECM? Mine being 94 i can flash mine anytime, but i know also that i can set the TCC to lock and unlock at any speed for a given throttle position, so im wondering if this is possible on the earlier cars as well, if it is you may just be able to change the lockup speeds VS throttle position and set it to better suit your car and driving style....

The 4th gear lockup kit prevents the TCC from locking until youre in 4th gear.

The .500 boost valve gives higher line pressure at WOT

I'm not sure about the chip...Good idea and I'll do some checking on that. It is an electronically controlled unit so anythings possible I suppose.

Thanks for the info,Sami. The TV cable is set! Checked and rechecked

I've read several threads written about Pete K and his integrity posted by Sami so I'd like to throw one his way. I had origionally posted a query re:Maddog trannies. Sami pm'd me saying that he indeed had one he was willing to sell at a great price. There were some issues w/shipping companies, not his fault. Sami stuck to it and got it done. Long story short, Coast to Coast sale went great. I'm back on the road and Sami can breathe easy that his tranny made it without damage.
It's nice to be able to have some faith in a network of strangers quickly becoming friends.
