my passenger side window has not gone down for over almost 2 years now i never got around to fixing it because the was in storage so today i was doing some cleaning and i cleaned both window switched with a qtip and some water(was just trying to pick up dust in tight spaces today) anyhow a coupe hours later i for some reason hit the pass window switch and sounded like it was gonna move but than the sound just stopped immediately but now when i press the button i can hear a faint click, based on all that would is the most likely cause here?
Same behavior from either switch (driver's side passenger side)?
sorry only the pass side is doing that, but im pretty sure prior to me cleaning those switches i got no response whatsoever from the pass side, weird..
the pass side window had died once before as well and a new motor was installed at a local GM dealer thats why i found it so odd for it to die again only a couple years later, you don't think it may just be the switch?
Only thing that makes the least bit of sense is in cleaning with water around the switch that water also entered the switch. Now the water is acting as a conductor and completing a circuit. If so when the water dries out there will be no more 'clicking'. That would indicate bad connection at the switch, either internally in the switch or at harness plugged into switch. Possibly the motor is ok, just not getting enough current to it to operate. Dang--diagnostics with a Q-tip and water, I never thought of that one before.
On mine ,the clicking was coming from inside the door. That's what I thought you meant.
well the clicking seems to be coming from the door area i think... but the first time i hit the switch i really thought the window was gonna go down cause it made that sound like it was going to but it stopped, but never before did it ever make a sound or click just silence... im baffled lol
Just guessing but you removed the pax switch to do the q-tip cleaning?
Did you disconnect the electrical connections or leave it attached.
Probably just fooling with it has woken it up. Probably just needs cleaned or buy a new switch.
no clue what a pax switch is, didn't disconnect anything at all... basically just dipped a q-tip(about 50 in total) in water and started cleaning crevices and tight areas, i just cleaned above and below each window switch
i just went to go check it out again and it still clicks but it only click when i push the switch in the upward(closing) motion if i push it down i get nothing

Swap out the left and right switches. Then you'll know if it's a bad switch or not.

ya i was going to do that before but got sidetracked... do i have to remove the whole middle console piece or can i just unscrew it and lift up a little to swap them? i really don't wanna undo the shift boot stuff and ashtray screws...
okay so about 20min ago i was in the car and i hit the pass window switch i got the click when i pushed up i pushed down a couple times but nothing, i pushed like 4-5times really hard and it started going down slowly i than pushed it back up and it would taper off real slow and stop so i pressed again and assisted in closing it with my hand and once again now i get no response other than the click sound when i push up
Unfortunately I'm not familiar enough with the '86 console to say with any certainty. If it was a later model I could describe what to do.
I'm guessing from memory the switches protrude through openings. So I'd guess you'd need to remove or loosen the console to get access to them. Is it auto or stick?
You mentioned it had been years since you rolled it down. I wouldn't be surprised that it doesn't want to move much. Are you doing this with the door open or closed. Might be easier on the motor if it were open and not having the resistance of the weatherstrip.
Until you can swap the switch to isolate whether or not that is the culprit, I wouldn't go assuming it's motors or regulators until you've isolated it.
Surely someone with an '86 who's been into the console knows and can answer your question.
^^^ yes the switches do stick out through openings / car is auto / my door was shut when i did all of this
i will play around with is i guess, ill give it a try with the door open maybe q-tip it a little more too and swap switches and hopefully it works and all i need is a new switch
Uh yeah... open the door it may just be binding against the wxstrip.
If that is the cause then you'll need to make a minor adjustment to the top two guides.
Didn't pickup any contact cleaner... I say a blast of it rather than the q-tip water trick.
Auto's are fairly easy to pull the **** so you can pull the trim console. You'll need snap ring pliers though.
^^^ ill pick up some contact cleaner also, i think i should be able to lift the console enuogh to swap the switches they just unscrew and pop in right?
