Default Window Motor Overloading?????

On my 84 vette, I found out that when I try to raise and lower the passenger window, it will start to raise for a little bit then stop. If I wait about a minute, then try to raise it more, it will start then stop again. I have the door partly torn apart but realistically can not tell much. It doesn't appear as anything is really binding or jamming. It appears to me that the motor is overloading and tripping out until it resets. Has anyone experienced this???? I am figuring this is probably a motor going bad in which case I am thinking if I have to replace the motor, it would probably be a good idea to also replace the ribbon??? Is that true? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

From what I've been told you are better off to replace with a new regulator from a later model, if you are going that far with it. I have the new style regulator on the passanger door and it is so much quicker and smoother. I am not sure what is involved in istalling, but from another '84 owner, you might want to look into it.

Default New Regulator??

I know I can go to Ecklers website and they have a new motor there for an 84 vette. Is this going to be the new regulator that everyone is talking about or do I have to buy a window motor from a different year vette? I am a little confused.

I believe he was saying upgrade to a later year model system.

The question is what year did you upgrade to?

Do you have the part number for reference?

Any issues with doing the upgrade?

Also should we assume your doing this with the door open and not shut causing resistance against the weatherstrip?

Mine became out of adjustment and I though the motor was gone. It just required fine tuning the alignment and it was fine. If it's similar you should have two 10mm bolts on the top that adjust the window in and out as it travels. If I remember correctly the change in direction is opposite the desire movement. Ok I know WTF, if you want to pull the glass in, the adjustment would be outward. I achieved the best results by having the panel off, re-attach the window switch, sit in side with your wrench and close the door. That way you can monitor its travel and make the adjustments right there.

Yes they have thermal fuses. When they overheat from excess current draw they open. Cool off and they close again.

This is usually caused by factory grease turning to concrete, but the window regulators are garbage to begin with. On their best day, they're still agonizing to use.

I went ahead and upgraded to the newer design regulators (including motors), very easy and worthwhile mod, here's my writeup:
