The hood springs are adjustable. There's also bump stops to limit movement. Sounds like his were out of adjustment.
If your hood is aligned properly, this won't happen.

Somebody brought up this topic just last night. I tried closing the hood (slowly of course) with the door open and it didnt hit it at all.

that something must be out of adjustment.

I think it's more likely to hit if the hood is dropped thereby allowing it to travel farther down than if closed slowly. Let's face it, the rubber bumpers on some of the early C4's are 20 years old. Age, heat and pressure are known enemies of rubber so after having that heavy hood pressing down on them with all the heat from the engine for 20 years, they could be failing to perform as they did when new. I just play it safe and close the doors.

Thanks for the tip I always drop mine from 6-8 inches, but never have had the door open, I'm gonna take a peak.

I always see these after the fact. I did the same thing to mine when I first got it, now my nearly perfect Vette has a chip on the drivers side hood where it hit the door. Mine chipped off a chunk, I was able to retrieve it and super glue it back on. It still kills me though.
