I'm not sure if this topic has ever been discussed on the FORUM but I witnessed something yesterday that totally blew me away. I was at my local mechanics shop on Friday and an out of town C4 pulls in to have his oil checked. The owner pops his hood and one of the mechanics checks the oil for him. After adding a quart, the mechanic asked if the owner wanted him to close the hood or did he want to do it himself. The owner chose to close the hood himself. He appeared to know what he was doing and proceeded to unlatch the hydraulic piston, pulled the hood down with his left hand, then held the hood in his right hand and dropped it the last 12". All of a sudden, I hear the owner cursing. Apparantly, he closed the hood with the driver door in the full open position and the bottom edge of the hood dug into the driver door. If I didn't see it with my own eyes, I wouldn't believe it That is one thing I am never going to do after seeing what could happen. I guess the aged rubber hood supports compress too far which allows the hood to travel too far. Just a heads up1
Hmm. I drop mine all the time on my 85 with the door open, and it's never hit.
The hood springs are adjustable. There's also bump stops to limit movement. Sounds like his were out of adjustment.
I used to close mine with the doors open all the time with no ill effect as well. I can't say for sure if there was a problem with his stops or hood alignment but based on his reaction, this never happened to him before.
my scissor style prop was not properly secured yesterday while i was doing some work and the hood came down but i saw it coming and only gashed my arm up a bit... these hoods can be deadly!
I shut mine most of the time with the doors open of course I dont drop it at all to latch it. I put it all the way down by hand and with a rag in hand give it a light shove on each corner and you can hear it latch in place.
