Shift boot question
Previous owner installed a custom black leather shift boot with red stitching in my red LT4 (it looks very nice). It has come loose on the driver's side. I'm assuming that it is held down by the console pressing down on it as I see no attaching screws down in there.
Any tips on reattaching it? Any tips on how to remove the console?
Previous owner still has the shop manual and I did not get it with the car since he intends on buying it back from me.
I hate to return it looking like this and I want to fix it before going to Funfest.
Thanks in advance.
Everything is hidden underneath the console plate.
Can't say for sure on the '9xs, but on my '85, I had to remove the shift ****, remove the center console/plate, flip it over to remove 4 screws that hold the boot plate to the console. The boot itself was glued to a wire bracket that has 4 screw eyelets at the corners.
I just got done replacing the center console top on my '94.
Getting the console off is easy:
There are three screws to remove: one (1) under the ashtray/cup holder and two (2) under the carpet in the arm rest storage area thing (sorry, it's getting a little late to think).
When you lift up the console top, there are three wires to disconnect (makes it a little easier to work on the boot): Two on the hatch release button and one for the cigarette lighter. I don't know if it makes a difference, but note which wire goes where on the hatch release.
Once that is done, you can get the bottom of the boot. There are four (4) screws that attach the boot to the bottom of the console. NOTE: There are four (4) metal caps that the boot screws thread into that slip over plastic posts. If you shifter boot came lose, one or more of these may have slipped off. I was able to use some pliers to pinch them back on (be careful since you are pinching against plastic). I found that the short stubby style of philips screwdriver works best.
I recently replaced the shift boot on my LT4 (with black one w/red stiching!). There are 4 screws that hold the boot in place. As mentioned, remove the center console plate to access them. As I recall, to remove the center console plate you remove 2 small bolts in the console itself (by the change holder thingy) and one small bolt under the ashtray. I may have had to remove the console door to lift the center console plate out...can't recall. Need to unplug the lighter once those screws are removed. Very easy job.
