Not a bad price. I took a guess at the actual price I paid since it was awhile back when I bought them but I knew it wasn't too much. Don't forget, it IS a CORVETTE part...could have been a lot worse.
John,
Some owners don't get the "pop" when releasing the hood, others do. Guess it depends on the tension of the springs and the adjustments. As long as it does release and you can pick the hood up with just one pull of the release lever, it's working.
OK, I got the small struts yesterday and put them on (after dropping and losing 2 of the 4 hairpin clips somewhere in the nose of the car).
So far, I don't really notice any "lift" difference. My hood still does not "pop up" but I think that is the springs problem, not the struts.
The small struts will, in fact, hold the hood open by themselves, but I like the added security of the little orange offset thingy.
I did have to pop the Long Strut loose so I could open the hood just a bit further and slip the small struts onto the pins. Then I reattached the long strut and all is well.
Truthfully, I believe that my Long Strut is probably not doing any lifting and has likely lost its gas charge (I didn't bother to check while I had it off). So now the short struts are compensating.
So lastly, is there an inexpensive source for the Long Strut? You can't really just replace it with an aftermarket replacement strut because they would not have the offset stop on them. Right?
The long gas strut on my 88 barely did any lifting as well. Id find one from a 96 model, Ive seen those things REALLY lift a hood, to the point you have to hang on to it.

Exactly. My replacement gas strut does all the lifting except the first foot or so and I have to stop it before it goes all the way up. Wasn't a cheap kit but I think it was well worth it. Somewhere around $150 from Superior Chevrolet.

Try TLD at http://www.tld-corvette.com/ I got the replacement for my 90 from them. I don't recall the cost but I think it was $40.00 or less. A new strut will make all the difference. I have to lift mine a little to get it started but then it pretty much opens itself.
