The dash in my 84 is acting up. I've read all available info regarding various known problems and haven't found anything on my problem...
The entire unit seems to be working normally (everything registers ok, temp, alt, tach, etc.) except where the mph indicater is there are three spaces for the numbers to be displayed. The first space displays normally but the next two are so bright that the numbers can't been seen, i.e. if I'm driving 85, the five is plainly visible but the eight is not, nor the space to the left of that. Also the ascending green mph curve is overly bright. Everythine else seems ok.
Any ideas guys. Don't really need any speeding tickets right now.
I have not experienced the problem you describe. However, have you checked out this site? http://batee.cc.umr.edu/corvette/dcrg/repair.htm You might find some useful information there. Good luck.
I remember Gordon Kilebrew talking about the early digital dash. To paraphrase his comments....It's kinda like your old slot cars with the copper pickups underneath. Eventually the copper pickups get blackened and start slowing down and acting up and you have to take an eraser to clean them up. Gordon recommended the same, take the dash apart and clean the copper contacts with an eraser.
There are a few places like Eckler's/MAD that will "refurb" your dash for a fee. Might be a good thing to do during the winter if you don't feel comfortable taking it apart yourself.
The 84 dash was fairly washed out even when new. It sounds like you have a
liquid crystal display that is getting weak. I'm assuming that this just started.
