Default Igi...

Im going in blokes, should have heads off tomorrow. Here are some pics i took along the way

I have found some strange things along the way, the heads are ported but the intake manifold is not(havent measured the ports yet to see size variations between heads and intake), the gaskets between intake manifold and heads were Felpro, which also appear to have been allowing oil to pass between the manifold and the heads and down into the combustion chambers via the intake valves. Despite the enormous amount of 'Ultra Black' that was used at each end of the manifold to block surface, if was leaking very slightly at the rear, it seems as though the sealant failed to adhere to the top edge of the block. Exhaust headers are going to be a barstard to get off, a couple of the bolts were done up using "the force" id say, cause buggered if i can get a spanner on them.

Pushrods and roller rockers....

Good luck mate, looks like you have it handled. Did you think about porting the intake manifold while it was apart?

Thanks blokes To be honest with you there RRT i didnt know it wasnt ported til i got inside today, id have thought with the lengths the previous owner went to with some of the other parts installed that the intake manifold wouldve been done, but doesnt look to have been touched!! I might measure up the port sizes and see what the differences are, and ill decide from there what ill do with the intake. Ill keep you posted on that anyway, im just about to pull the PCV system off it to give it a clean out and see what is in there that shouldnt be....

Your a brave man!! You shouldn't have any problems with the rebuild. Just take your time and ask questions as you come to them. If the heads were milled that might explain why all the sealer? Have fun and keep us posted.--Livy

the bracket will have to come off... you will more than likely need to remove the PS pulley to get it...

Also, when you reassemble - the intake manifold will like this little trick - drill a number of small random dimples into the chinese walls and the mating surfaces on the intake. This will give the RTV something to bite into.

If you can get it, get Permatex Copper RTV or "The Right Stuff." The Right Stuff is a new thing here in the states that dries faster and is more durable than normal RTV. The Copper does seem to hold up well. If you can't get them, lemme know... we can figure something out.

Thanks Bogus, i had thought about drilling some little dimples into those parts for that purpose yeah. All those Permatex sealant products are available here too, ive got Ultra Grey and Ultra Black here, and ive seen lots of others including the Ultra Copper as well

Is the bracket bolted to the left head?

I think it is, but there is another problem... it's simply in the way. I will check it on the wifes LT1 and confirm.

I would use the Ultra Copper. It deals better with heat and oil than the other products.

I just checked the bracket... it is bolted to the left head.

It's to the right of the PS pump, near the manifold/block juncture.

Default Drill?

If you are going to drill the ends of the block (front & back ) and the intake......do it before you have the block rebuilt. I would suggest a better way, use a center punch and a hammer. You will not get drill chips into the block and you will not be fighting the drill bit sliding around on the surface you are trying to drill. The center punch works very well on the cast iron block and great on aluminum!

Use the "RIGHT STUFF" for sealing the ends of the block.

Righto blokes, i have an update for yas, im all the way in, will take some pics of the heads shortly. (And Bogus am i sure glad i didnt go to the trouble of taking off the accessory bracket!!! It doesnt need to come off)

But before i get to the pics, here is what ive found on the way in.

Crane gold RRs, as seen above
Double springs (little inner ones)
Ported on the intake side
Appears to be stock on the exhaust side
Lots of black stuff....
No ridges that i can feel in the short time i looked. (Walls seem to be smooth as glass)

The old center punch and hammer trick goes way back...friend of mine showed me that after second attempt at sealing my 62...and removing the screw driver stuck in the garage door

Hell yeah I'd port the intake before re-installing it.
