The carpet in the trunk area of my 89 is in perfect shape except for the tear that goes around the pin that holds the rear carpet to the glass hatch area. I would like to repair this area instead of spending the $200.00 to replace the entire rear carpet set. It is possible to use either Super Glue, sewing kit, hot glue to fix this issue....other ideas.
I used duct tape to fix the exact same problem. Just try not to use so much that it shows after you put it back together. I had to do a little trimming. It's held up for over 2 years now. :yesnod:
edit, also, I didn't duct tape it in, I used the tape on the carpet to cover the holes real good then I made new holes! :D
Excellent idea of taping the entire backing, then just create new holes where the original one resided. Can you give me a quick paragraph of issues or difficulties that might arise ??
Since it's been a few years this is by memory (which ain't that great  ). First you will have to remove the screws in the plastic covering the cargo shade. There are some obvious ones on top and the two on the sides near the corners. You'll see why you have to remove those once you get the piece out. Just pull up on the piece you move to lock the targa top in place as it has to come off also. Be careful with the plastic covering the cargo shade as it's usually brittle from sitting in the sun. (also use care when tighting the screws when replacing) Once you get the cover out of the way you'll see how the carpet goes underneath the shade and where it's attached. On mine there were some metal push circles holding it in place. If you take some pliers you can walk them up; you'll figure it out. Once they are off, you can flatten them back out with a hammer to put them back on. On my holes, I just use several layers of duck tape, applied in different directions and folded over front to back of the carpet. This is were you need to make sure you don't use so much so it doesn't stick out and show when you're done. Once you have the holes sealed well, you can take an exacto knife or similar, and make a small new hole. Slid the fixed carpet on the posts, and put it all back together.
I didn't remove the cargo shade when I first did it as I wasn't sure how. I've been told that it can be remove with a screw driver by prying it out. It's suppose to be easier to get it back in. Would probably make it easier to do the job if it were out of the way.
