Default TOOOOOOOOOOO Quiet

Alrighty, I took the catback off to have it fixed.... wasnt very loud after taking it off Then I took the Cat off and gutted it.... So I decided what the heck I'll fire it up with only the front Y on. NOT LOUD.... Shocked me and my dad... we figured it would be ground thumpin loud... Darn Y pipe with low compression. Oh well. What's your folks thoughts on the car with nothing but a front Y? I did put the cat back on, I'm going to have a shop weld up the rear Y this week if I find some time. Just a big shocker to me tho... way to timid in my book. Oh well

I drove the 86 around with only the CAT and a chopped off rear Y-pipe. Since the exhaust exited under the car, it was a bit noisy inside. Later on the rear Y and a set of Borlas helped to calm down the resonance.

Your right. Without any muffs or CAT the car is rather quiet. My guess is the factory shorties and front double tubes restrict exhaust flow tremendously.

I've ran my car with open long tube headers with no front Y-pipe. I was changing out my exhaust for smog, and figured I'd fire it up to see how it sounds. It literaly had the stuff hanging on the garage walls vibrating just idling. The interior creaked and buzzed from places I never knew could. Sounded monstrous.

That's what I thought mine would be like with just the front Y on... I have cut exhaust off of other V8's that have proven to be louder than this one... It's just a shocker. I know how to make a loud set of pipes, altho when you rev it with just the Y it wounds wicked! . I'd love to do long tubes and a complete exhaust setup but $$ isn't all together yet. Altho I did find a set of flowmasters with the rear Y and hardware to mount it, for $300/obo + shipping... is that a good deal? They have the polished tips.

Anyone know why it's not loud the way it sits with a gutted cat? Vs. above?

I have a 91 with a 383 with StainlessWorks long tubes, single cat and Borla Stingers. It sounds loud and mean from idle to WOT and in between and thats for me who has lots a little of my hearing in my old age.

Just another confirmation I need to start saving up for a set of long tube headers. Hmmm, C5 brakes?...headers?... C5brakes?...headers? Choices. choices.
