Cleaning it may help, but it sounds like the mast ribbon may have lost a tooth or two.
I agree.....the PM is to use mineral spirits to clean the mast.
You can get a replacement ribbon for little over $20 and it's an easy install. Consider also a bypass switch that is available from MAD and similar suppliers. It permits you to use your tape player or CD without raising the antenna. I can get most of my local radio stations w/o raising the mast.

Loose 2, then 4, then 8 , and ...well, you know the rest.
Unforunately for me, nothing helped mine - it's 21 years old. I tried oiling. cleaning,waxing,forcing the bugger back in. Finally it died. Had to cut the wires otherwise the battery would've died (stuck in the full up position, constantly tried to retract and I didn't want to disassemble the rear hatch carpeting)
I'll be buying a whole new assembly sometime this winter.
They aren't too expensive, around $150.00 for the whole shebang.
Cheaper elsewhere, I know.
