Default Quick Question!

Is there any way to tell a ZR1 from the outside if the guy won't pop his hood? I understand that anyone could do an engine swap, but are there any specific colors that the ZR1's came in or anything else like that?

The reason I ask is that there is a local kid that has a Vette that he calls a 96 LT4. However, the car has LT1 badges on it and ZR1 rims. He claims a completely stock car and motor with a 100 shot of juice. Motor times are mid 12's supposedly and low low 11's, to high 10's on the 100 shot. The guy refuses to pop his hood ever, under any circumstances. I know the LT4's had a red intake, but that's about it. The car sounds stock as all get out. Whisper quiet.

Any tips and or suggestions on telling the cars apart from the outside?

*** FRom the Side
( rear tires are 315's and DONT stick out of the fender )
( Lower rocker panels are vertical, almost like they're flared compared to a regular vette. IE: regular vette is like this: \ ZR1 is more like | )

***From the Rear
It has the updated bumper, AND a third brakelight at the TOP of the car.
There's SPACES between each side of the license plate and the reverse lights.

***Inside
8k Tachometer, and on the center radio bezel, toward the bottom left, is an "ENGINE POWER" switch.

An LT4 has nothing to do with a zr1. Zr1 was the special package from 1990-1995 (which has the LT5 motor)

To tell if its a REAL lt4.. Verify it's a 1996 car.. If it's a SIX SPEED, it's an lt4. If it's an AUTO, its an lt1.

Thanks, Smash...

I'll be checking out his car a little more closely this weekend... I'm not real worried if I get a chance to line up with him in my H/C'ed SS..

Thanks!

The 96 LT4 is whisper quiet. Another forum member here, Erricer, just bought a 96 CE and you can hardly hear it run. But obviously if he won't pop his hood, something's up.

I see you're in Tampa too. What's going on this weekend that you're talking about? Street races? Cause Wed. night at Sunshine Spdwy is the only test & tune night I know of.

Btw, maybe I'm just drawing a blank right now, but what is a "H/C'ed SS"?

TJR,

I was referring to the "street drags" tomorrow night at DeSoto, and the regular Saturday night fun out on Gandy...

He admits that he has spray, so I just for the life of me can't figure out what he is trying to hide. The H/C'ed comment referred to heads and cam. I ran mid 11.8's at DeSoto at test and tune last Saturday. All motor and on street tires, on my shakedown runs. This is going to be a WONDERFUL winter of racing.

Will you be at the Vette/Viper/Fbody shootout?

Oh yeah, I have the guy's VIN number, it is actually a 94, not a 96. (Having police friends is pretty cool sometimes) What can I look for on the VIN to see what the car was originally?

it's an LT1, if it doesn't have the widebody like I mentioned in my first post in this thread.

The 8th digit of the vin will tell you the motor, the 10th will tell you the year. I have all of the specs at work.
